Man asked woman to leash her dog in a public park -- she called the police on him

Anonymous
I'm sure it's been said already but this was a 57-year-old birder who called her out for not leashing her dog. And apparently he is known in birding circles. Tweet from a group called Manhattan Bird Alert:

1) Leash laws in the Central Park Ramble are essential for protecting birds and other wildlife. Yet they are too often flouted by habitual offenders. 2) We know the birder who filmed this for his politeness and civility, and are relieved that he was unharmed.

Her apology was BS. First, it starts off with “I’m not racist” when clearly she is. Second, she says she didn’t mean to harm the man or the African American community. This also is clearly a lie. By weaponizing her white fragility, she endangered every Black man in the park that day. The inability for her or others to see this is due to the racism and privilege that is so prevalent in this country. Finally, it is not just the Karen’s that need to apologize. Our entire social fabric needs to change. All systems and institutions need to recognize and acknowledge the part they have played in creating an environment for this type of behavior to thrive. For the last several years we have seen video after video of police encounters and people still wanted to say it’s just a few bad apples. Now we are seeing more and more citizen interactions and again y’all are quick to accept an apology and move in. Where do you think she learned this behavior? It is everywhere and in everything.

If you find yourself empathizing with this awful woman and not the birdwatcher trying to keep this piece of nature for its intended purpose, you're an asshole and a racist.

Social media does not equal reality.
Does messed up stuff happen? Yes.
Most of the people posting crazy stuff like this have an agenda (no life too), so dont take them too seriously.

I really don't think this guy had an agenda. He also has a life and is a Harvard graduate. One of his hobbies is bird watching which is why he was in the park that day. He did not post the video his sister did.

Yes, he had an agenda. His agenda was to preserve the Ramble for bird watching, which is what it is set aside specifically to do. Unleashed dogs and cats in the area scare off the birds, if this happens often, the birds will avoid the area entirely, which defeats the purpose for which it was set aside. This man, an avid bird watcher, has very few places in NYC to pursue his avocation and this clearly entitled racist felt as so many entitled people do that their wants trump other peoples' rights.

Good point and very overlooked by many. When cops arrived both parties were gone - but what if she'd stayed and continued her faux panic/fear for her life routine? How many black guys in Central Park would have been harassed by police?

Usually it would be the white person who is trying to admonish the "lawbreaker". You can't BBQ here, you can't sell water here, you can't deliver packages in a gated community because you are black....

In this case it was a black person who took it upon themselves to admonish a white person for rule breaking.

I wonder how the situation would appear - before the calling of the cops - if it had been a black off-leash dog owner being lectured and filmed by a white person?

Well when that happens let us know.

I just saw the video. As an AA woman of two small boys, I find myself crying. Right now my boys are cute to the masses, but in just a few years they will be considered a threat simply because of the color of their skin.

There was no reason for him to approach her and video it so he was setting up the situation and zero respect for him. She handled it very badly but has a right to feel threatened by recording her.

Recording someone is not a threat. Maybe just a threat when a black man does it?

According to his own post, he told her "Look, if you're going to do what you want, I'm going to do what I want, but you're not going to like it." Then he produced a dog treat -- because apparently he walks around with dog treats "I carry for such intransigence" and called for her dog to come to him.

I do believe she grossly overreacted and should not have had the dog offleash, let alone called the police and told them she feared a black man.. However, I also believe this man may have a chip on his shoulder and went looking for trouble. And I "I'm going to do what I want, but you're not going to like it" could clearly be perceived as a threat and calling over the dog could be perceived as either an attempt to abduct or poison the animal.

I also believe that the people on Twitter whose first reactions were to dox her and post where she is employed and call on Twitter to "do your thing" to get her fired (she has been placed on administrative leave" is a disgusting form of mob justice and if this lady would be justified in suing the hell out of anyone who encouraged that. I would.

You offer apologies because it’s the right thing to do. But there is no expectation they’re accepted. A true apology is fixing and changing the behavior that led you there.

Can I take a moment to admire that this man is FIFTY SEVEN?

You're kind of simple, aren't you?

BTW, people are using a term to describe this woman that has essentially become an epithet of its own, including the man's sister who posted the video.

Nobody accepts their apologies and we don’t have to. They’re garbage people. Just like this chick.

Exactly this. I have wanted to take pictures of entitled dog owners so many times to shame them into compliance with the law. I’ve never done it, but my only agenda would be for them to comply with the law. Maybe other entitled dog owners will think twice about breaking the law after this. I’m glad this awful woman feels like her life has been destroyed.
