The Blair magnet is not actually the best for STEM. It is very engineering focused but the Poolesville magnet is better for life sciences.
The hands down best magnet in the area is TJ over in VA. None of the MCPS magnets come close to it in quality, prestige or programming. |
Yes, look at the title. We are not here ranking HS STEM programs. We are helping the OP to choose the right ES. Which means: if the kid does not get into the magnet, this ES should eventually feed the kid to somewhere strong in STEM. For that, we compare (the part of) schools kids can get in by living there. The magnet part of Blair does not come into play in this discussion. |
But the OP is asking about MoCo. And I would not consider Blair magnet to be Engineering focussed. A comparison of Wheaton engineering magnet's course offerings with Blair's is instructive. Most of Blair's magnet courses are in science, math and computer science. |
I think this started when one poster stated that some W feeders were vastly better and offered HS SAT averages as proof of their claim. Then several other posters dug a little deeper and found their data was out of date and misleading and in fact the real STEM schools actually do as well or better. This hasn't sat well with some parents, but the facts were clear cut. |
It may very well be that the "non-magnet groups at Blair outperform their W counterparts school hands down" but no one has shown that in this discussion. And the school's overall average being higher than any W - not a surprise as it includes the magnet cohort. |
Neither Poolesville or TJ garner anywhere near the recognition, awards, scholarships that Blair does and that's a matter of public record. |
| Its very insular to believe that Blair is more prestigious than TJ. TJ is known nation wide , Blair is not. TJ is consistently listed in the top 10 magnets in the countries. Blair never makes the list ever. |
The facts were clear cut: every year up to 2017 when MCPS has data (from MCPS website), Blair's average SAT is clearly lower than the Ws. Someone had a document on Adobe Cloud, appearing to be a report from Blair showing its class 2018 has SAT average of 1318 (or something alike), which is about 150 higher that how Blair did in previous years. There is no other data on class 2018 in any other MoCo HS to compare with this number. These are the facts. You compare different schools in the same year. In any previous years, Blair is not as good as the Ws. In 2018, Blair's (claimed to be by that Adobe CLoud doc) SAT has nothing to be compared with - no SAT results shown from any other schools in MoCo. I don't see the logic in saying "Blair is much better" from any of these data. |
LOL. Blair magnet makes TJ look like third world. Stay in VA. This is MoCo |
You’re making TJ look bad. You're too clueless and ignorant to be a booster. TJ wishes they have Blair's C/V https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regeneron_Science_Talent_Search Stay in VA and let educated folks talk. |
| I’ve met many TJ grads whilst working in NY and in Silicon Valley tech. I never heard of Blair until reading dcum. I’ll look for it next time I go to the Wheaton Costco. |
And that's why Blair, despite being a fraction of its size, somehow manages to win far more significant awards each year. Ooops I mean why TJ deosn't actualy compare at all. |
TJ is more a quantity of over quality type of thing. |
| Why can't the W's do better than Blair? Their non-magnet SAT average is only 1318? |
It figures. You probably were not smart enough to go to Stuy or Bronx Science nor have any kids that made it there. They know about Blair. |
