Do you have to back into every parking space?

Backing out is not dangerous at all, if you're actually paying attention and looking around/over your shoulder like you're supposed to.

The data says your anecdote is wrong, but I'm sure that doesn't matter to you.

Guess what? Backing OUT takes longer than pulling out headfirst. You're going to have to wait a few seconds on the front end or back end, so just calm down and accept it.

That makes absolutely no sense. If you're backing in, then presumably you're doing so because you think it's safer than doing directly in a space. Meaning you are incapable of going in, and backing out safely. It's such a basic driving skill and if you have difficulty doing so, you really shouldn't be driving at all. You're distracted, you're not looking over right, left, right, left, then again. Slowly. It's not difficult at all if you're backing out correctly.

And you're only counting half the equation regarding time. You can't possibly expect to be taken seriously!

I back in because I know my surroundings backing in without anything coming up unexpectedly (pedestrian, Car in a blind spot). I like driving forward with full visibility of the parking lot activity. I can see kids running away from mom, rolling shopping cart, another car about to back out. It just makes more logical sense to me.

Right. It means you lack elementary driving/parking skills and should park on the far end of the lot anyway, or not drive at all if you find backing out so challenging. I assure you, most normal people don't find it remotely unsafe because they know how to properly back out of a space due to basic driving skills.

Stop feeding this troll, people. Ignore him.

I'm not a trill - it's true. The only reason people back in, is because they're too incompetent to back out properly.

Just don’t ding my car when you load your trunk please!

You're right, despite all the links to research and statistics that attest to the safety of backing in, the only reason people do it is to piss you off.

I began backing it in on the driveway after my weekly shopping.

When I began working in an office with a super tight garage -basically room for 1.5 cars but 2-way traffic, I began parking on the top floor. Away from others. These days the garage is almost at capacity. I now 100% of the time back in. I had a guy lean on his horn the other week after I backed in. What made him an ass though was his 40 mph speed through the garage. Really?! It’s 830 am and you can’t sit?! Get up a little earlier next time.

The worst is that the garage (made for 1.5 car span) has parking spots at the end of every row that don’t give enough room for 2 cars to go in opposite directions. I can see the cars heading towards me (I sit high), so I routinely wait. The folks in sedan/coupe cannot and near misses all too often. Worst is when someone is backing out. I cringe.

Talk about burying the lede. Your monster truck is clearly too big for the garage. Get a normal sized car.

What is it with people begrudging drivers who back into a parking space? Get a grip - it's not a big deal.

I was backing out of a parking space once, carefully. Turns out someone behind me was also backing out at the same time, in the blind spot, and cars touched each other. Some parking lots are really awkwardly designed and it's too easy to create problems backing out. If you can deal with it, good for you. But for those of us who can be a little challenged, it's just more practical to back into a parking space to avoid problems when we recognize a parking lot as problematic.

Just be patient. People are patient with you when you're backing out of your spot inch by inch and it takes you 5 minutes.

You do not have to back in or pull in. You do what works best for you. But you do have to be careful and considerate to others.

I back in my space at work for two reasons. One, I can back in easier than I can pull in usually (pulling in woukd take several adjustments). No one is that impatient in the morning, but if you hold them up at the end of the day backing out, your life is in danger : ).

That's not burying the lede -- it is the lede. The very fist two sentences are that she has an extended SUV that she believes is the biggest American SUV.

"Burying the lede" is when you bury it in the latter part of the story, instead of the introduction.

I backed into a spot today because of this thread

Also easier to get a jump if you have car trouble

The fact that you think your time is worth more than everyone else's says volumes about you.

Tragically, most narcissists are unaware of their affliction.

Same sense of entitlement as those drivers who cannot be bothered to clear the snow/ice off their cars before driving. They can drive around me if it bothers them! They can wait for me to park!

Oooh you crossed the line there! People who back into a space are not doing it to spite you. We're not selfish. It's safer this way. I backed up my little TSX before backup cams were a thing, and now I back up my SUV (with aid of backup cam). If there are other cars waiting to pass, i'll pull to the side and let them pass before I back in (if it's a tight spot and I think it might take 1-2 extra maneuvers).

But the people who don't clean the snow/ice off their cars before driving are literally the scum of the earth.

This is the worst trend, all the result of those back-up cameras. Suddenly, everyone is an expert at parking rear end in. Too bad it takes them 2 hours to get in, holding up everyone waiting behind them.

It’s not 2 hours, though. It’s 5-10 seconds. What the f*ck do you have to do that can’t wait 10 seconds?

5-10 seconds???? Yeah right.

People are busy. And it's usually holding up a line of cars just so you can get out easier. So, yeah, the entitlement is on your end, not mine.

If you dont know how to back in and park with any sort of efficiency, dont bother doing it. I dont care if you back in. Dont be that person that has to go in and out adjusting themselves and wasting everyone's time, because of your stupid belief that its safer, or whatever. If you cant do it without holding up 20 cars and readjusting yourself, just stop.

Snowflakes are easily triggered by not being able to make other people wait, OP. It is the only "control" they have in their lives. When I see someone back into a space, I just think how empty and pathetic their lives must be. But why tell everyone through their driving?
Anonymous
Unless backup and pull in times are different, it’s irrelevant. In my experience, people are good at:

Quick, accurate back in and quick pull out without blind spot

Or

Quick pull in, and a slower, readjusted backout.

Rarely are they good at both.

The safest way to get in to a parking spot is to pull in. The safest way to get out of a parking spot is to pull out. None of these going in reverse business. The solution is obvious. Reversible cars. No problems with visibility either way.
