Dianne Feinstein is speaking VERY well.

She is coldly and calmly enumerating all the many reasons why Kavanaugh should not be confirmed.

You can listen on NPR 88.5 or wapo front page.

Why would anyone still listen to her? Do you not blame her and her staff for leaking Dr. Ford's letter to the press, violating Dr. Ford's explicit request for confidentiality?

even hatch says she didn't leak it. Get over yourself.

You are saying if someone maybe does one thing we don't like, we should not listen to them. Well kavanaugh maybe did 5 things wrong. WE SHOULD NOT LISTEN TO HIM.

Why do you need to personally insult me and others that disagree with you? Please let your intellectual arguments speak for themselves.

I have not heard that Sen. Hatch said Sen. Feinstein (or especially, a member of her staff) did not leak the document. Please post link.

Can I also add, I really hope the leaker of this document is prosecuted. Dr. Ford wanted privacy, and she was betrayed.

She is an old white woman and should not be in the senate. She needs to be in a nursing home.

Oh please. See Nixon era complaints about leaks. You focus on leaks to distract from the substance of the bad acts that were revealed. You are fooling No One with this bleating refrain.

We Kavanaugh’s own history in regard to supporting leaks.

Swing seat on the SC.

That doesn’t actually answer the question. They could have nominated any of the other right wing jags.

Difference is that Bretty has been bought and Bretty will vote to let Trump and his GOP treason goons off.

He is Judge Kavanaugh, to you.
And why confirm this guy?

At this point, there is no way I want Senators to bend to the extreme, obnoxious, dirty tactics of the left. That is where I am with this nomination.
It would be an invitation for left-wing activists to slander and attack any nominee put up by the right.

Thomas was confirmed by a Senate with 57 Democrats. Roberts, Alito, and Gorsuch were confirmed without a great deal of drama. Fact is that any resistance by the Democrats would trigger you and prompt you to support whoever the Republicans dished out, no matter how problematic that person was.

Kavanaugh is no Tom Robinson. Be ashamed.

Ashamed of the belief in the foundation of our legal system of innocence until proven guilty? Never.

I have no doubt that something terrible happened to Dr. Ford. I watched her testimony, and I feel sympathy for her. I really do.

However, there is absolutely no evidence that Judge Kavanaugh did anything to her. You are letting your emotions take over your rational thinking.

I don't know if Ford and Kavanaugh intersected or what happened when they did.

I know that his behavior today is unacceptable for a Supreme Court justice. His behavior over his past professional life is also unacceptable for a Supreme Court justice.

The man's personal and professional life was blown apart by this accusation. He was angry about being blindsided by the accusation. I give the man a pass for righteous anger.

Again: judges don’t get to be righteously angry. They don’t get to cry and gnash their teeth. They don’t get name their (imagined) enemies (especially when they have themselves acted as partisan hacks). Judges don’t get to be human in that sense. They must be calm and controlled.

At the hearing, he was not appearing as Judge Kavanaugh. He was appearing as Brett Kavanaugh - human being and one who has been wrongly accused of heinous allegations.

The man is literally a sitting judge and is bound in all cases and times, by the judicial code of honor, which he violated on numerous occasions.

If Collins is planning on running for the-election she will votes yes. If she votes no, Trump will back someone who will challenge her in the primary and she is likely to lose. If she votes no, however, it is not like the Dems are not going to put someone up against her in the general election.

She wants to run for Governor. If she votes yes, she can kiss that dream goodbye.

The question is only.. how low will the senators go? Will they preserve the legitimacy of the supreme court or will they turn it into another partisan and untrustworthy branch of government?

Low. Very low. He will likely be confirmed. And we can all mourn the day he ruined the Supreme Court. Way to go Brett!

Here's the thing - if he were truly an upstanding, for the good-of-the-country, non-partisan guy, he would recognize that his appointment to the S.Ct. is going to undermine the institution, perhaps very significantly and for very long time, he will always have an asterisk next to his name just like Thomas (though I suppose, like Thomas, he figures he can just hang with his boot-licking Federalist society guys to make himself feel good), and his nomination is tearing this country apart. If he weren't out for anyone but himself, he would withdraw for those reasons. But, Exhibit A - Brett himself - establishes that he is only out for himself and to hell with the country.

Here's the thing - NO ONE appointed by the President will be acceptable to you. Period. The only people that will see him that way on the wackos on the left, and yes, sadly, there are plenty of you. Look in the mirror and get some help.

Most of us had no problem with Gorsuch. Merrick Garland would be an acceptable option.

This is not a valid argument.

Even before Kavanaugh’s name was announced, protesters were ready to protest ANY nominee. So, just stop with this line.

Since Judge Kavanaugh was on the president's short list of four expected nominees, it would make sense that groups would have researched each and had a response ready to be released shortly after Trump's announcement, but in most cases it was apparent that groups either prepared a generic response and filled in the blank with the nominee, or expected a different name to be announced.
Some protesters at the steps of the Supreme Court wen the old-fashioned route, making their signs on the spot with markers and poster boards. However, as one digital reporter noticed, the signs were already filled out...except for the name.

Other protesters at the Supreme Court were ready with more slickly produced signs, so they had to print several different ones and hope that one of them was the right name, as another reporter documented.

Another reporter noticed that one protester would not let signs go to waste, even if the name on it did not match the nominee. The protester boldly held up a "Stop Hardiman" sign, another name from Trump's top four possible picks.

Once President Trump made his announcement, and Judge Kavanaugh started speaking, news releases from opponents and supporters started flowing into email inboxes at news organizations around the world. While they got their releases out fast, at least a couple of opponents made a misstep that showed they were ready to bash Trump's pick, no matter who he (or she) may have been.
For example, Democracy for America's release stated that the president had nominated a "right-wing ideologue" whose nomination it vowed to fight because "she represents an assault on justice, freedom, and core democratic values."
Clearly, Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a man, so the DFA may have been expecting Trump to nominate another federal appeals court judge named Amy Barrett, another name on the president's top four likely picks.

Judicial Code of Conduct - section Kavanaugh violated

An appearance of impropriety occurs when reasonable minds, with knowledge of all the relevant circumstances disclosed by a reasonable inquiry, would conclude that the judge’s honesty, integrity, impartiality, temperament, or fitness to serve as a judge is impaired. Public confidence in the judiciary is eroded by irresponsible or improper conduct by judges. A judge must avoid all impropriety and appearance of impropriety. This prohibition applies to both professional and personal conduct. A judge must expect to be the subject of constant public scrutiny and accept freely and willingly restrictions that might be viewed as burdensome by the ordinary citizen.

Anonymous wrote:I love all these people who think they know how “professionals” respond to false allegations of moral turpitude, when they have no practical experience seeing people so accused.

Reminds me of when people though Amanda Knox was a sex murdress because she did a cartwheel when dealing with the death of her roommate. “That’s not how you act” they chanted, never for a moment reflecting on the basis for their suppositions about how one is to respond to a different situation.

I don’t know what the truth is for Kavanaugh or Ford.

I do know that you cannot divine any great insight from his anger after being accused. In either direction.

Some of us have lived through similar experiences, which we cannot describe in detail because we do not wish to be identified. We all behaved with grace under fire, because this is what upright people do, with jobs and reputation on the line. Sadly, unless it's the EXACT same accusation for the EXACT same position, you will refuse to believe this carries the same weight.

Too bad for you.

Even if what you say is true, I am not sure you can extrapolate from your N of 1.

I've been falsely accused in a very public way, and it made me ANGRY AS HELL.

Now, that doesn't mean I automatically conclude BK is innocent. Simply that very few people can relate to this situation, and postulate from how they imagine they would act. Like how they would act if their roommate was murdered in a foreign country. Foxy Knoxy.

Then you are not Supreme Court material. There are jobs in this world that require a certain character and personality.

Under pressure, I am preternaturally calm without even consciously deciding to be - it's a defense mechanism because I feel I need to have all my wits about me. I couldn't be angry if I tried.

My husband, who was publicly accused in a very contentious and downright dangerous situation, also had the same reaction. He stayed extra calm because there was so much at stake.

Again, different people, different ways of dealing with problems. Some disqualify themselves from certain posts.

Sorry, no, taking it up the *ss while being worked over by a bunch of political thugs is not a good trait in a judge. We need someone who is willing to stand up and fight for the rule of law, logic, and reason.

Why are you so angry? Why do you want everyone in positions of power to be angry, too? Operating from a position of anger and/or fear is not strength, it is weakness. You make bad decisions. Someone who can't handle stress does not have a judicial temperament.

As does the orange turd and had toilet paper on his shoes walking up the steps of Air Force 1.

Wow. He must be really old, then.

Feinstein has an agenda and that's all that matters. Selfish bi***.

Welp, here you have the modern GOP folks, in their own hate filled words. Maybe you should "lock her up", right PP?

Protesting is not the same as what is happening now.

This confirmation process is tearing this country apart. Kavanaugh is not worth that.
