The fact that she's Muslim is irreverent.

Agree x1000! Who cares what race/religion someone was. A beautiful young lady was murdered by a thug. Who shouldn't have been here to begin with.

Btw. You never see 'Christian girl murdered' or 'Jewish girl murdered'.

Exactly. The "Muslim" part was inserted to play up the "hate crime" angle before any facts were known.

OP here, and that's complete bullshit.

I first found about this story from my FB feed, being connected to ADAMS - the Islamic Center the victim and others were near - BEFORE the story broke in any media outlets. It was strictly word of mouth at first, and a small fact based on the very little information available at the time - the victim was Muslim, and her assault/abduction was connected to her mosque location at the time. While it may not be an obvious hate crime, the details are relevant and speculation of it being a hate crime were/are not a stretch, precisely because it's so senseless.

The fact that anyone could assault and kill a pedestrian as "road rage" is almost a harder concept to grasp. People understand that lots of people are prejudiced against Muslims. That is a fact in America, at this point in time. And it almost makes "sense" for her death to be a hate crime, because... what kind of nutjob kills a teenager girl for walking? Both are horrific, but one narrative is more heard of.

Sad, but true. I always read the WaPo's comments on FB and so many were out commenting about how Trump has made the haters come out in force and how they can't believe what this country has become under Trump. Whatever you may think of Trump, you can't pin this on him, but people sure were trying to act like it was a Trumpist hating on muslims.

If a girl in a group leaving church on Easter Sunday were killed, then the headline would probably say "Christian teen killed".

The headline wasn't to play up a hate crime, it was just factual.

Laughable.

There are couple flows in your analysis. This is not a fact that a lot of people are prejudiced against Muslims in US.
There are a lot of teenage girls get raped and killed across the US every day.

(I'm not Jeff.) Sure, if this particular guy had not immigrated illegally, he would not have been able to commit the crime. It's easy to see in retrospect that we'd be better off if he hadn't come here. But would we all be safer if no illegal immigrants came? This seems to be your question and agenda. Studies seem to show that immigrants -- in particular illegal immigrants -- commit crime at lower rates than native born Americans: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/illegal-immigrants-and-crime-how-big-a-problem-is-crime-committed-by-immigrants/
So maybe we would actually be better off with more illegal immigrants and fewer native born Americans.

Wow. And you wonder why those who are apologists for illegal immigrants (Hint: Democrats) just can't seem to win an election.

DP. You're missing the point. While people say crime rates would be lower if all illegal immigrants were deported (which isn't realistic by the way, unless you don't want police to do anything else), the facts don't back that up.

+1

That's just because "we want to lower crime" is a lie. They are xenophobes who are targeting immigrants - some legal some illegal - because they are generally fearful / angry / paranoid. They need to hate *someone* and blame *someone* for all of their problems. Illegal aliens are a big target these days for these angry, old white men. AKA the republicans.

That's some interesting armchair analysis. Again - why are you apologizing for people who are in this country illegally? Not once have I heard a reasonable response to this question.

- A young, reasonably happy, minority woman.

Nobody is apologizing for undocumented people in this country. Like everything else in life, it is a question of priorities. What government services are you prepared to give up or how much higher taxes are you prepared to pay in order for the government to devote resources to rounding up and deporting millions of people who are not causing any trouble? Personally, I'd rather see law enforcement resources going arrest violent citizens than non-violent non-citizens.

Meanwhile, law enforcement resources are being wasted when they have to be used to go after violent non-citizens who shouldn't be here in the first place.

DP, you are so way off. I'm not an angry white man (I'm a POC whose parents are legal immigrants).

In fact, YOU are the one who is being xenophobic. Sounds like you are assuming that all illegal immigrants are from a certain ethnicity? That is simply not true. I'd like the US to get a hold on illegal immigration, doesn't matter what country these people are here from.

And it is completely fair to blame illegal immigrants for the crimes they actually DO commit. How is that even in question?

THIS. Yet all we hear are excuses after excuses.

How utterly ridiculous. The lengths you apologists will go to are astounding.

I think men are murderers and rapists. Do you agree?

Nice generalization there. You're probably the same sort of person who takes umbrage at other generalizations ("all ______ are _______"), but men are fair game, right?

did you even read the post above the one you responded to?

Think for a minute. She was out at 3 am. Groups of teens out at that time of night are often up to no good. But this group was out at that time of night for religious reasons. For good reasons, not bad ones.

But go ahead and bash her and the reporting about her murder.

None that meets a legal definition.

Many of you are sacrificing due process in favor of a political circle jerk.

Some of you are proclaiming this a hate crime with absolutely no evidence. Others just keep bitching and moaning about him being illegal, while ignoring the fact that he still has rights.

Where did I bash her?? I - and other PPs - are saying there is no way an article would mention anything about the religion of a Christian teen if that teen had been murdered. And everyone knows it, so stop pretending otherwise.

So many crimes happen every day all over the country. Two groups have latched onto this one because they think it supports their worldview: 1) people against illegal immigrants; and 2) people in support of Muslims.

But 40 people are murdered every single day in this country. The details of any one of their cases could be used to build a story to support your own particular cause. But anecdotes don't prove anything. And meanwhile the real horror is that 40 people are murdered every day.
