If by nicest you mean biggest and less expensive, maybe, but I think there is pretty fair consensus that Langley Farms (Waverly, Dogwood, Langley Lane etc), Turkey Run and Ballantrae Lane area are the nicest parts of McLean, albeit at a $4 mm entry point...

Those are all decent for new money. Old money live in upper McLean.

Where do you come up with an obscure term like "upper McLean," much less the nonsense that "old money" lives there? We aren't on the Main Line here, Dorothy.

Upper and lower have been used since I moved here in the early 2000s. I have never really figured out the cutoff though. Like, is it 123? Kirby? I think most would agree outside the beltway is an easy standard.

No. 123 has always been the boundary for Upper/Lower McLean.
Anonymous
You would think it would be the beltway.

I think a lot of people with kids just delineate using the high school pyramids (Langley vs McLean). Same difference though.

So most of 22101, the zip code that is increasing more, is McLean? And McLean/22102 and Great Falls are mostly Langley?
Anonymous
22102 includes a portion in tysons corner, which is why no one really uses zip codes.

Actually, the old McLean people I know (2nd+ generation) might have been left a small, old house by their parents, if that. But the grandparents do pay for private school, so that is a nice perk. McLean was not traditionally as monied as other places/areas (of the U.S.) you would think of as old money. There is a ton of new money in McLean. Traditionally, there is the Langley side of 123, and the McLean HS side of 123. Just because people grew up in Langley (or McLean) does not mean they are from money.

Not exactly. Almost, but not exactly.

It's also because a portion of 22101 are zoned for Langley and they want everyone in the world to know it. God forbid they are zoned for McLean HS.

So Upper McLean don't want to be confused for Lower McLean who don't want to be confused with North Arlington who don't want to be confused with South Arlington. That pretty much sums up the last three pages of posts...with absolutley no discussion about where GF falls into this scheme.

It all came up because a poster suggested earlier the parts of McLean most recently called "upper McLean" have more in common with Great Falls than the parts of McLean inside the Beltway and/or south of 123.

I think her point was that Lower McLean is more like North Arlington and Upper McLean is more like Great Falls.
