s/o Ever traveled somewhere and been disappointed by it?

Bethany beach. I remember when it was a small town.

But we were young backpackers and knew nobody there.

That's funny, because I went to Bangkok as a business traveler and kept thinking how much more I'd have enjoyed it had I been a young backpacker!

I've been to Bangkok twice and have enjoyed the gritty feel and energy. Lots of noise and traffic buzzing around. Just so unlike here which is quiet and tame in comparison.

You must the smell of sewers.

Bermuda - BOR. ING. The food was not good.

South Beach Miami - For all the reasons mentioned by previous posters.

South of the Border, SC - WTF? All that build up for hundreds of miles for a dusty, ghost town, tourist trap?! I have never been more disappointed about the reality of something after a crazy over the top build up in my entire life. That was about 25 years ago though, so maybe it's different now.

It's worst now...it reminded me of a sense in a movie just before a drug fueled shootout.

Bali. Its natural beauty has been trampled and there appears to be no public works or national park service equivalent at all. Beautiful natural sites were literally like landfills, with piles of food garbage everywhere and aggressive monkeys all over the place. The locals are desperate to make money and honk at you from their cars, hoping you'll hire them as a day driver. The honking is incessant and the fumes are horrible. I was so, so surprised and disappointed. It was just filthy, and t-shirt shacks are EVERYWHERE. Those gorgeous tiered rice paddies? The most famous one has exactly ONE place to stand where you can frame the shot without a shirt shack.

Phuket also sucked. We stayed in a very expensive resort on on of the higher end beaches, but every time we ventured out it was dirty, smelled, the taxi mafia is unreal, and there's a scam around every corner. If you'e going to Thailand, skip that mess and go to the wonderful Chiang Mai instead! Bangkok is also far better.

Just nothing to recommend it. Blah beach, drab houses.

I agree. What is the appeal?

Never understood it.

+1000

What a dump!

Oh my yes - and horribly boring. Please, everyone, stay away!

I see you're trying to be clever (or something), but no need. I would never go back. Wretched place is overpriced with nothing to really recommend it. If you've travelled a lot, this isn't for you. If you haven't, then...well, I'm sure it's lovely. (cough, cough)

Hmm. Well, I'm multi-lingual and have traveled extensively, and I like Corolla quite a bit. It feels upscale, comfortable and safe, and the beaches are beautiful. But it's not a place to go if you only get off on going to exotic places. You could spend six hours in the car and then run into your next-door neighbors the first day, and that spoils it for people who want to brag about having gone to some place others have never heard of.

Upscale? Is that a joke? The beaches aren't very beautiful, either. If I want to run into my next door neighbors, I'll stay home.

Not sure what being multilingual has to do with anything. I'm from Northern Europe, hardly anyone speaks only two languages. I guess it's a bigger deal for you.

^^Bali poster above, back for more.

I agree with so many of these. San Antonio was boring, and my then-bf and I both got food poisoning. New Orleans (went a few times pre-Katrina) - I just hated it and didn't get the appeal at all. South Beach - trashy. San Fran - overrated. LA - no thank you. Hilton Head - zzzz.

Also went to Taipei - snore. Edinburgh - so-so.

MORE amazing than expected: Zion National Park, UT; Oxford, England and environs; Seoul; Charleston, SC; Tokyo.

I'm a Paris fan. I adore Hong Kong.

Generally I guess I expect more from places I've built up as tropical paradises, and less from cities, and am duly disappointed/excited when I turn out to be wrong!

Tokyo scared the bejeezus out of me. You can take the small town midwesterner out of the midwest...

Agree about Oxford and Charleston.

Second time - one week in August 2 years later - I was so disappointed. It was nothing like I rembered. Super hot, over crowded, huge lines, a huge hassle to get a cab, to get a table in a restaurant, etc - it was like they were doing us a favor by seating is.

I will never again go during the summer months....

Rome was ok, but not as nice as I imagined. Same as Florencr. But we have relatives in both places and they made the trip wonderful. The small cities in Tuscany, around Florence were great.

I will never return to Venice...

Sounds kinda like Disney World. I would never go there during busy, hot, summer.

Thanks for this and the thoughts about St Lucia. I've only been to the Caribbean once and we're starting to think about a trip there for our 10th anniversary.

Leaning towards PR. Easy to get to, easy to explore, lots of lodging options.

We love Grand Cayman. Have been twice. Gorgeous. Easy. Clean.

Agree with that, but also expensive and sterile.

Does sterile mean clean? If so then yes it's sterile which is how I prefer it over other Caribbean islands I've been too. Didn't seem overly expensive to me.

The Dominican Republic was TERRIBLE. We stayed at a resort that wasn't in Punta Cana. There were a ton of Europeans smoking everywhere, some crazy French chick tried to attack me out of the blue and had to be escorted off the property. A tour operator extorted us for tips. The hotel staff was incredibly rude. To top it off, our credit card info was stolen twice. The beach was beautiful, but I will never return.

I've traveled extensively, and there are very few places I haven't enjoyed, but the DR is one I can comfortably say was not worth the money.

New Orleans was kind of meh, but this was post-Katrina. I had always wanted to go which was disappointing.

Interestingly, I liked Baton. Louisiana has interesting state capitol building. I walked around LSU too. I actually found Lafayette interesting. So different from this area.

Wayne, NJ. Ha! As awful as I thought and as it sounds.

Philadelphia.
Grubby. Crime-ridden. Ugly. Unsafe. Dirty.

We finally stopped a couple months ago when we had to go to the bathroom. It was so bad it was almost good. I bought a foot long lighter for a friend. But we decided to wait to pee elsewhere, as it was so creepy.

Dublin.

I hated the city of Dublin. Loved the country side, smaller cities (like Kilkenny) but hated Dublin.

It was dirty, trashed, smelled, and over crowded. Graffiti everywhere.

Just gross
