residency cheater in Janney PK.

To follow up on 9:45, I don't think many get how difficult the two-parent drop off and commute shuffle can be.

Many of us who work on the west side of town or in Bethesda would love to drop off at a school close to the office and then have a short drive to work instead of dropping off close to home and slogging through traffic into work late.

Think of those office towers in Friendship Heights. You don't think some people working there live in Virginia? How nice would it be to drop off at Janney or Murch and then head up the road?

Solution: before care at your local school.

Hey, I'm the person who posted that, and beforecare is exactly what we have done for the past four years. I have no sympathy for cheaters.

It isn't cheap and the mornings are not too difficult on the kids only because we are so tough on the evening dinner/bath/book/bed schedule, but we made it work.

But, this is why the "why would someone in MD or VA cheat" rings so hollow.

Agreed. A better reason is that these schools (like Janney) are actually superior to most (all?) suburban elementary schools.

let's just keep our feet on the ground. my kids are at a JKLM elementary school and we love it, but thinking that people may trek all the way from VA to upper NW because our schools are superior to suburban elementary schools is just BS. I knew a family who cheated (found out years after the fact) taking their kids to upper NW schools and the did it because both parents worked in Tenley and it was convenient for them to drop off and pick up immediately before and after work. they had a long commute so they would have paid $$$ for before and after care and probably even a babysitter to pick up kids from aftercare. the fact that the schools were good was also a great bonus, but they would have cheated even if the schools were comparable or even less good than the ones in their areas. there will be cheaters until DCPS gets serious on enforcement, which is not just kicking kids out of the school, but also making them pay for back tuition ALWAYS, even if it takes years and years to get the entire payment. now cheaters are simply kicked out, so for people who are dishonest there is no incentive not to try (at worst they are just kicked out).

Wait, who DOESN'T have this issue?

Cool story, bro.

So, you're saying, people do it out of convenience, too? Yeah, I don't think there's any one reason why people do it and that no other reasons are relevant. You seem to understand this when you say "the fact that the schools were good was also a great bonus."

Let me get you on record here: do you not think Janney, Key and Mann are superior to suburban elementary schools in VA and MD? How about superior to some number of schools greater than "all of PG county" but less than "every school"?

I think the point is that quality is somewhat secondary to convenience. No one is coming from VA to Janney and then back across town to work.

People are on your side regarding residency cheaters, and someone still comes out of the woodwork to act like an asshole?

Typical toe shoe dad.

I am not a bro (if anything, I would be a sis ...) I am just a JKLM parent who wishes that DCPS took a sterner position against cheaters and who is very happy about her kids' experience at said JKLM school without having to believe that our school is the best elementary school in the metropolitan area and that people who drive from Fairfax or Arlington so their kids can attend such marvelous school. nobody cares of what I say on record (??) but since I do not know every single elementary school in VA and MD I cannot certainly say whether Janney, Key and Mann are better of VA and MD (plus I do not have a direct experience on at least two of these schools either). and frankly I find these kinds of statements (the best elementary school in DC, area, east coast, which JKLM is the best and so on) totally ridiculous. I have friends in MOCO and VA who seem very happy with their kids' school and based on my conversations with them I am fairly sure their schools offer the same opportunities for a great education. are you so insecure that you need somebody else to tell you that JKM are better than some more than "all PG county"? are you for real?

You're replying to me. I agree with pretty much all of your statements. I took issue with your initial claim "thinking that people may trek all the way from VA to upper NW because our schools are superior to suburban elementary schools is just BS." The implication is that the schools in question are not sufficiently desirable (i.e., good) to sometimes warrant such a trek. This is mistaken. That is all.

I think the cheating is awful, but this whole thread has such a gross tone to it with the people who have to feel that their kids go to the greatest school in the universe and that the rest of the world is substandard and jealous. Give me a break. I have been teaching in private MS for almost 20 years, and I can tell you tons of success stories and total failure stories of kids that come out of all of those schools. So much depends on the kids so please stop the smug comments. 99% of the parents I have dealt with are doing the best they can by their kids and all feel that they have provided them with fine educations. You are not a better parent, but if that is what you have to tell yourself to sleep so be it, just stop annoying the rest of us and making district parents look like assholes.

My reply was a response to the post on 9/29 @9:01 "How sad is their situation that they would try to get into dcps, one of the worst school systems in the country" and others like it.

Get off your own horse.

I'm not the original poster that you are replying to in this converstaion -- but I did not get the impression that PPs response was directed towards YOU in particular. Maybe you should calm down.
