I work there and can't imagine wanting my kid to go to a DC school. School is more than just 9-3...it's about community. The same kids in my daughter's class are also in her soccer, dance, theater classes...where we live. The same kids we run into at the Farmer's Market or at town celebrations, movie nights, etc. A little bit of convenience to avoid some stress at pick up - not a chance. You work where you end up working - you live where you want a home and community and that included school... |
| Virginia has school buses. This thread is so funny. I don't think people in Virginia are clamoring to get into Janney, just a hunch. |

The only parents that pay attention to the quality of specific dc schools are parents living in dc. The vast majority of parents that live in VA that are not recent ex pats with 5 year olds know nothing of the JKLMM schools (and the like).
I am a Janney parent and I love the school, but people in nova with kids are mostly where they are for a combination of schools and location. Just like those living in the JKLMM districts. They, however, likely never scratched the surface of dcps because it is not for the faint of heart. That's okay with me, north Arlington schools are more crowded than JKLMM schools plus you have to live in nova. I am glad so many make that choice or the JKLMMs would be even more crowded. |
| Hey people, in Arlington there are magnets, special programs and schools that people want to avoid, just like DC. A mom in my office went to 5 or 6 open houses. I can imagine someone saving a $15,000 tuition problem with Janney. |
If you "can't imagine" sending your kid to DCPS, then why are you cruising the DC Public Schools Forum? Odd. Anyway, only 25% of DCPS students go to their in-boundary schools. Most travel to other schools or charters. So you end up with different sets of friends sprinkled around. School friends, dance friends, local playground friends. It's different, but kind of cool. Not that Janney kids have that experience. Probably more like a typical suburban experience, but with more private school neighborhood kids thrown in. |
| Curious to see MD cars in line to drop off kids at Janney @10.30 am this morning. Maybe a caregiver but not too many nannies drive a late model Cadillac Escalade. |
| I saw a nissan with MD plates and an oyster car magnet last week. |
|
No, no, it just can't be! All Janney families know each other and would know if there was a cheat!
Or at least that was what I was told when I pointed out that all schools have cheats. Just the way it is. |
I've seen it, too. The MD Escalade has a Syracuse sticker. |
It seems that all Janney needs to do is to monitor the drop-off lane and then start asking questions of the families whose kids arrive in cars with Maryland license plates. |
It might be harder for a non-DC resident to cheat their way into Janney than Hearst for example, but it apparently happens. |
| So I am confused - are Janney parents nosy judgey busy-body detective wannabes with nothing better to do, or a bunch of residency cheats? |
Apparently both! |
