I'm a 40 year old mixed race woman. The only people that I've heard use the N-word were blacks. Besides television, I have never heard a white person utilize a racial slur and I'm around plenty of white people. I often socialize in predominately white social settings. However, I've heard many black people utilizing the n-word and other racial slurs about other ethnic groups. My first experience with racism was when a black boy called me, "yellow n-word" in the second grade. I've also been called, Oreo, Uncle Tom, Whitey, Whitewashed, Redbone, Ol Yellow, and lots of other hateful names by black students in DCPS. This was one of the reasons why my mother place me in Catholic schools because the black students in DCPS were extremely vicious. Unfortunately, my mother was one of those liberal hippie loving types who didn't believe me until she heard it with her own ears. We still talk about this today because she had to admit to herself that she was naive about how racist blacks were in DCPS. Some of the teachers were too! There were quite a few teachers who treated me like crap because I was mixed. That's why there was no way in Hell that I will place my children in DCPS. I had no problems at my diverse Catholic school because my mom and I were surrounding by other families who share our beliefs in multiculturalism.

I also, find it interesting that some black people accept other blacks utilizing racial slurs. However, they are quick to denounce those slurs if someone else uses them. Don't even get me started on the colorism and the racism that blacks have amongst themselves base upon skin color. They have racist names that they call each other base on skin color. I learned at an early age that it's perfectly acceptable for blacks in DC to be racist. I'm not saying that all blacks in DC are like this, but I've never been in an all black social setting where someone didn't say a racial slur. This puzzles me because if you don't like racial slurs thrown your way, then why do it to someone else? It seems hyprocritical to me.

Just yesterday I got caught in the downtown cherry blossoms traffic, and when merging over to the middle lane a young white man driving in that lane obviously thought I cut him off (really, traffic was so heavy there was no other way to merge); when I got over into the right lane, the young man pulled up next to me (my windows were open) and called me a "jungle bunny." He also made lewd gestures at me and cursed.

I had to laugh, I haven't heard that one in forever.

Please people, don't come onto this forum being so high and mighty about what white folks don't say anymore. Not all white folks are like this, of course, but there are plenty enough who still are.

Here's my thought: I'm white, I've never used the n-word, I'd lay into one of my kids if they did, and I don't control other white people, some of whom are racist.

However, I have heard black kids use some variation of the word frequently and white kids do likewise when they feel they are in the good graces of their black friends. What I've told my kids is that there is nothing in it for them. It's a linguistic grenade where the black kids hold the trigger. It doesn't matter if the black kids use the word "nigga" more often than anyone else; if they decide on any particular day they don't like a white kid pretending to be a brother, they can pull the trigger and call the white kid out. And I don't want my kid labeled a racist or accused of hate speech simply because he couldn't read a social situation correctly or some black kid was having a bad day. We have a rich language and there are some words that need not be used.

Of course not, because they will get their ass kicked. So, you're not breaking anything to me. I'm aware of how liberal whites in DC operate. I think the majority of people in DC are racists period! That goes for both blacks and whites. Whites in DC have to remain in the closet racists due to safety. Also, no one will give a damn if a black person in DC attacks a white person. So, the only choice they have is to say racial slurs in the company of other whites. It's sad, but it's the truth. However, blacks in DC are not PC. They have no qualms about projecting their racism in public. That's the difference between the two (DC whites & blacks) that I'm talking about. Whites in DC are great at faking it, but blacks are not.

I'm not sure what is worst though. A white person who conceals their racism or a black person who professes their racism. The people in Washington DC just need to deal with and address their problems with racism period!

I get your point that you find it hypocritical to not talk as much about blacks using the n-word, but either you seem to be denying that whites still do. They do. So agreeing with someone who says they don't is bizarre if you knew that already.

But the additional thrust is, while the n-word may be in use less than it was 50, 100 yrs ago, it has not "spluttered out" nearly as much as most of us who still hear it said antagonistically wish it would. It is still more alive and well than it should be. And that is not including the young'uns who use it in a "familiar" way and aren't saying it with hate. (But I do include anyone who does use it negatively, including AA's who sometimes use it negatively against other AAs, which I have also heard.)

It's spluttering out, but needs to die completely, and is still used waaaaay too often to be considered "not in use much among whites". Myself and too many other AA friends can count too many times it's been used in our presence by whites (and not white teens trying to "hang"), even in the last 5 years.

That's the only time I saw a white student get beat unmercifully, when the white female student called a fellow student a black bitch. It was enough to make everyone appalled.
