Are people really saying that a white parent is a bigot if given a choice they would prefer not to send their child to a school that is 85+% AA and 0% white. We are a middle class AA family with DD at DCPS. Chose to live in Shepherd Park rather than CCDC because we like the community and didn't want DD to be in a small minority at ES. I don't think that makes us bigots. And therefore can understand why non bigoted white folk might not choose McKinley, for eg.

People are saying a lot of different things in this thread. Some understand the concern, some read other things into the concern depending on what was expressed.

Yes, white kids would use the N word, they would not say "take your black ass....." then there would be other obnoxious issues to deal with, not just from some (not most) classmates, but from some teachers. Bro in law just told me about his DS who attends a school in which he is the only black, and was cast as the only monkey in the school play.......crap like that.

As a white guy in my 30s from a rural northern area, I have to say that while I am acutely aware of the existence of the N-word and its radioactive implications, the only people I have ever seen use it in my presence were either black people or basically lip-syncing along with the music. There are a LOT of painful insults out there, but among people I know, you'd have to work to find somebody who's ever used it to insult anyone. Things have gotten more sly, and less direct, it seems.

That said, I'm sure anyone who's ever heard it used against them, even tangentially, would be pretty angry. And as evidenced by that old guy who got whooped on the Metro after using it, there's some idiot still out there throwing it around.

So I have a hard time believing some white kid's going to be throwing that around at the playground in 2013, whatever its frequency 50 years ago. I have a feeling if I ever heard my kid say that, it'd be like the one time my wife would be OK with corporal punishment for our son. And, oh, he'd get some. And I bet that's a pretty common sentiment.

May I ask why are white people so fascinated with blacks using the n-word? 11:16, you're being sarcastic? Whites don't use it freely as they once did but they use it more often in certain comfortable surroundings. It is a word that we as blacks/colored/negroes have been able to turn it in many uses.

Chris Rock did a great stand-up piece on "Is a white person ever allowed to say nigger". He says the answer is "it depends..." and then laid out a hilarious set of rules and circumstances under which it is allowed. You should look it up. Very funny, but also, informative with regard to the power of the word.

As an AA person in my 30s who's had it used by white people against me many many times in my life (and no, not only in the southern US), I am 100% offended that you would presume to know what every.single.white.person in the US does or doesn't do.
