A goal of 40% URM and first gen students

From 2022?

It’s no surprise that a very smart student would see through the short essay questions for VT. They are performative nonsense.

57% acceptance rate, 27% enroll. So do they actually yield protect with those numbers?

Nope.

Can you explain to the rest of us "stupid" who didn't see through the performative nonsense what exactly what you/your kid saw?

DP. The acceptance rate would be higher if they didn't yield protect. Acceptance rates between 40 and 60 tend to be schools that yield protect. Another prime example, Santa Clara University.

Funny our HS college counselor has always said the opposite. VT is mostly about GPA and stats-least holistic out of all VA schools.

Disagree. Perfect GPA/SAT neighbor's kid was waitlisted at VT. In at higher ranking university in another state.

Maybe PP didn't want to list them?

So what do you think is the thing that makes them decide yes or no?

We have established that very high stats kids are accepted. We have established that very high stats kids are waitlisted.

What do you personally think makes them choose between the two?

We know they don't read LOR. We know they don't track demonstrated interest. We know they don't count legacy. We know that they accept the same %s from counties all over the state, so you're not hurt by region.

How do you think they are yield protecting with the data they have?

Based on my kid's FCPS HS, some friends' FCPS HSs, and the FCPS HS at which I teach, the Naviance scatterplots show that most high stats kids are getting accepted to VT. A few naysayers on DCUM keep posting otherwise to stir the pot.

Same. And the higher stats ones who don't get in don't have strong community service records (or considered VT such a safety that they acknowledge they didn't work on the essays much).

This.

I felt like every essay my kid wrote, outside their main essay, was unnecessary non-sense. It felt in each case like a hoop jumping exercise to demonstrate you were willing to put for a minimum amount of effort to be considered for admission.

I disagree. The questions aligned with their values which check whether the students would be a good fit at the school.

Virginia tech's motto is That I May Serve. They say over and over again that service is very important to them. They want to see lots of community service and they want a compelling (short answer) essay about that service.
