I took a two-mile walk this morning, 100% on sidewalks and bike trails.

The majority of sidewalks looked better than people's driveways, but the sidewalks right in front of people's driveways were slick where cars had driven on the snow. The long stretches between homes, however, were dry as a bone.

It is brutally cold, though. Two layers of pants, three layers of tops (including a coat), warm socks and shoes, gloves, and a hat were not enough to keep me warm. It is extremely cold.

I'm going to drive my middle school kid to school this morning. She just got over a respiratory infection that landed her in the ER three times in seven days, so I don't want her in the cold more than necessary.

Kids don't wear coats..

Should we sooner close schools for the entire district than to make a teen wear a jacket on a cold day?

Again, Reid nails the call!!! I will be emailing to tell her how much I appreciate her willingness to keep schools open for slight weather.

And now the bus delay page has crashed. Never seen that before. Interesting...

Clearly the wrong call. The roads are incredibly slippery and dangerous with sheets of ice on them in Mclean. My kid’s bus didn’t come. Luckily there are two buses at his stop.

The stupid metal detector line is so long for my high schoolers.
Today, of all days - they couldn't wait until Wed when the temps will be warmer - they roll out the more sensitive detectors- eye glasses, 3 ring binders, etc will set it off.

Delaying on 12/5 but not today? Ridiculous.

I don’t know where you live, probably in the middle of Appalachia, but this is certainly not “slight weather.” This is nasty sheets of ice. If Reid keeps this up, #closefcps will be circulating again.

So many drama llamas here. Get on with your day people. It’s like you want something bad to happen so you can feel vindicated. Sick.

This. I wonder how many posters are teachers who wanted a(nother) day off.

Well, she closes school for every minor religious holiday so kids have to go to school sometime.

I don’t see the drama, but good job working in a cut at teachers. This site doesn’t insult them nearly enough.

Oooh.

I forgot about FCPS deciding to move the metal detectors from minimum strength to maximum strength this morning.

What terrible and irresponsible timing

There were a few icy patches on the road up to my kid's early start elementary school this morning but it was tolerable. We opted to drop them off at kiss and ride rather than walking due to the temps. Waiting 2 hours wouldn't have made the ice or temperature situation any better because the ice was in shady spots that won't get any sun anyway and it's still going to be bitterly cold in 2 hours.

I'm surprised they didn't delay based on past decisions and my kids were disappointed they have to go on time but, at least for elementary schools in our area, it was the right choice to start on time.

People are hysterical. There was a previous post saying FCPS is going to “KILL” the students. Kids will be killed over this decision and Reid will have to live with having blood on her hands!!!
