Call at 5am Thurs

lol. Sorry, you're going to have to go to work before that!

Not a teacher and I work from home. My youngest of 4 is a sophomore and I know MCPS. They won’t even begin to shovel out schools until mid day Tuesday and the school parking lots and walkways will not be done and treated by Wednesday morning. It will easily be 3 days off

Mid-day Tuesday leaves plenty of time to clear parking lots and walkways by Wednesday morning.

I think we'll find that last January's failure was a wake-up call to MCPS admin. It was very unusual for the county to publicly call out MCPS's BS about the response to that storm. As screwed up as MCPS is, they must have made changes after that. I don't think we'll see a repeat.

MCPS never makes changes and there has never been a storm of a foot of snow and ice where schools weren’t closed for 3 days. If it was ending early Monday, maybe but the warning ends 1am Tuesday. If you all think the county will have 200+ school parking lots, bus lots, and walkways all cleared and treated in less than 24hrs, you are delusional.

I think there are some posters on this thread who aren’t aware of how much work there is to do (bus lots, parking lots, sidewalks, damage to school buildings, heating concerns, pipes, access roads, etc.).

They also aren’t aware of staffing issues, and that there isn’t an army of people at the ready to prepare all of these schools.

So to them, this is easy.

But you see, they don’t CARE. Their KIDS have been HOME for TWO WEEKS (insert dramatic gasp here).

MCPS has 25,000 employees, including 1500 building services employees. Do they disappear when it snows?

I loved it! Don’t worry, it’s a snow day.

Not for everyone.

Yawn.

You cannot blame MCPS that the buses cant pick up students and cannot reach the schools when the streets are not plowed.

You cannot compare Montgomery County’s snow preparedness to a county in Massachusetts. We dont get enough snow on a regular basis to warrant spending the money. The downside, however, is that every 3-5 years school is closed for more than one day.

MCPS is closed for multiple day stretches almost every year! Remember almost exactly one year ago? Almost the same situation. Snow on Monday. Streets were cleared on Tuesday, but MCPS didn't bother shoveling their sidewalks until Thursday morning.

Yeah that was pretty bad. They hadn't done anything. I remember we were picking up my kid from the childcare provider at the school on Tuesday afternoon and the school sidewalks we're covered in ice. Not a soul in sight working to clear them.

Your school let the child care program operate on Tuesday? Everything was shut down at our elementary school until Thursday.

It was understandable that Tuesday was a mess. But there was no reason they couldn't have gotten their act together to open on Wednesday.

That was 3-4 inches. Bethesda is in the 12” range. Add ice and refreezing.

Get childcare for the week.

12 inches isn't much and Bethesda will be plowed out quickly.

Oh my God could l you imagine if the county has full snow gear? "Illegal immigrants spending my tax money on snowplows that sit idle 49 weeks a year while they eat cats!!! Go back to South America if you can't handle the cold!!! "

No, they can't. I mean, I guess they could, but it wouldn't count as a school day so teachers probably wouldn't be happy about having to do virtual plus a make-up day.

Weather forecasting has greatly improved in the last 25 years. And even if it didn't start tonight, we couldn't be sure it wouldn't start during the school day tomorrow. They had to close. But they shouldn't celebate.

Why not celebrate? The kids are all celebrating. That’s what it is about. Embrace your inner child.

Think of the parents scrambling because they still have to work but now don't have child care. Or the kids with special needs that are going to miss out services, likely for several days.

Yes, this closure is necessary. And yes, NT kids will celebrate. But adults shouldn't. Thousands are being impacted negatively by this.

Please grow so very much up.

Do you frequently celebrate when bad things happen to others? That's a pretty sociopathic behavior.

Nope. No longer allowed.

The context for that is that state law effectively doesn't allow it anymore after school districts abused the former broad allowance. It wasn't intended to be used for typical winter storms-- that's what the make-up days in the calendar are for.

There is no way MCPS will be open on Monday, Tues, or Wed. My street usually does g get plowed in Potomac until 2 days after the snow. The county just doesn’t have enough plows for the amount of asphalt in such a congested county.

Same where I am in Silver Spring and I live around the corner from an elementary school. I say Thursday too.

Get a shovel and dig your way out. That’s what our poor community does.
