I just looked at the weighting of each component of APUSH exam. Nowhere does it say the essay portion is 60% of the exam. From Princeton Review:

Multiple choice: 40%
3 short answer: 20%
DBQ: 25%
Long essay: 15%

70-80% correct questions earn you a 5

But its correct that 40% is multiple choice and 60% is written answers. Thank you for the breakdown

My son took 7-8 APs but only sitting or 3 AP exams. He wanted college credit for calculus and lang so he doesn't have to take them again. But otherwise he doesn't care about the scores except for college credit for a small handful 2-3.

This is insane. My kid took the test yesterday from a DC private that doesn't even offer APUSH (just one level of US history) and he said that there was nothing on the test that he didn't know backwards and forwards. He is not a cocky kid (and readily admits when something is hard) so I believe him when he says this.

It's crazy how little many students learn in class.

I will but again, this is a kid who historically never overestimates his performance. If anything he is anxious/self critical and it's the reverse. Most recently he thought he bombed the ACT and got a 35.

If he tells me a test is "a joke" I tend to believe him. I think it was the APUSH multiple choice that were stupidly easy.

Fwiw, my kid is a bit cocky. Took the ACT without prep and said it was easy…and got 36 on first try. About yesterday’s test, they said it was fine…the bulk of the test is NOT the multiple choice. And that’s where knowing the format and how to answer questions are important.

Yes, all of the 60% is considered to be essays.

Hopefully the changes to the DBQ and LEQ scoring this year will result in a higher pass rate. DC came home feeling fairly good about the exam and thinking a 5 was not out of the question. We’ll see come July.

Why does there need to be a higher pass rate? Surely that devalues the 5's.
