What’s stopping the people living in the sanctuary city of Chicago from housing these people? Why don’t the good democrats take them in to stop them from freezing to death?

Are any authorities or charitable organizations in Chicago ever given notice of when and where and how many of these immigrants will arrive in advance of their arrival? In many instances, there has been no notice. Texas isn’t wrong to spread the pain around — in fact, I think it’s fair for states that aren’t on the border to absorb their share of undocumented immigrants — but it’s a deadly situation to drop these people from warmer climates into the middle of a bomb cyclone to fend for themselves without resources. That doesn’t punish the citizens of Chicago; it punishes vulnerable people, some of whom have legitimate asylum claims.

Does Texas have any control over when it receives illegal immigrants?

What is Chicago supposed to do, pick up a stick along a roadside and wave it around Harry Potter style while yelling "Habitatum ex nihilo" expecting housing to magically appear out of nowhere?

That’s what Texas is expected to do.

It’s amazing that you don’t realize that.

No state or city can deal with the numbers of people flooding the border. Texas is showing people what has been happening there for years.

Wait until the hospitals, ERs, and schools of Chicago feel the full impact. It’s devastating. I lived in South Texas for 4 years and relocated for work recently. My family still lives there. It’s becoming worse by the day.

It is amazing that you don't realize that if it is wrong and a hardship to have no control over people "flooding" the state, it is EQUALLY IF NOT MORE wrong to intentionally do that to another state. It is as though people never learned that two wrongs don't make a right...

DP.

I will never vote for a Republican, but on this one issue, I say Bravo to Abbot!

The only way Democrats are going to be serious about illegal immigration is if blue states are burdened with the costs.

I am a bleeding heart liberal, but Democrats are hypocrites on this issue.

This "two wrongs don't make a right" argument is similar to Republicans' argument on abortion: 'the fetus' life is precious and most be saved, but you dare not ask us to help you take care of it.'

I'm the PP you quoted and do not understand the comparison you are making here. What TX is doing with dumping people:
Wrong #1: done to Texas: lax immigration enforcement lets people flood the city
Wrong #2: done to Chicago: Texas intentionally dumps people in their city without notice or time to prepare.

Wrong #2 does not become Right because of Wrong #1.

How does your analogy track that?

By declaring themselves "sanctuary cities" these cities have already agreed to take in these people. There's no "wrong" about it.

For the 6,473rd time, that is not what "sanctuary city" means in Chicago or most other cities. All it means is that they will not enforce federal immigration laws or help CBP do their jobs for them. It DOES NOT mean "we will house and feed everyone" or any of the other such nonsense claims being made.

In other words, we Chicagoans don't think we should have to enforce immigration laws because large groups of immigrants don't affect us. We like to sound kind and welcoming to immigrants. Just don't let too many of them come here. It might overburden our schools and services, but it's fine for Texas and other states to be overburdened.

It is NOT fine for Texas to be overburdened. It is also NOT fine for Chicago to be overburdened, particularly intentionally and at great cost by another state.

Then time to enforce the immigration laws.

PP here and I absolutely agree we need to enforce immigration laws. Texas also needs to stop the dumping.

Nothing gets done while those border states patiently wait for unaffected states to care about the immigration crisis and quit minimzing the impact.

This is the crux of the matter. The Biden administration (and Democrats in general) have turned a blind eye to the border crisis, gaslighting all the way and claiming there "is no crisis!" Abbott is clearly at the end of his rope and has no other options. What he is doing is frankly, exactly what should be done to get Democrats to wake the hell up to what is happening. Enough is enough.

Do you really honestly think that he has no other options?
Do you really honestly think that these flights are even making any appreciable difference to alleviate the strain put on Texas?

You don't.

Do YOU honestly think Abbott should just stay quiet and put up with the status quo at the border while continuing to house and care for millions of illegal immigrants because Biden is too much of an idiot to sign border reform legislation?

You do.

Sign what legislation? Did you not have any civics classes? Do you not know how a bill becomes law? The President does not make laws, that's the job of Congress. There's nothing for Biden to sign because Congress hasn't sent him anything to sign.

True - the bill hasn't made it out of the Senate for Biden to sign because DEMOCRATS refuse to pass it. However, Biden COULD sign an Executive Order at any time to stop the flow of illegal immigrants. But of course, he won't.

Just a quick refresher for those who insist none of this is Biden's fault - from 2021:

President Joe Biden has signed three executive orders that take aim at his predecessor's hardline immigration policies and try to rectify the consequences of those policies.

They will build upon the actions taken in Biden's first days in office and begin to provide a clearer picture of the administration's immigration priorities.

"My grandfather would say by the grace of God and goodwill of the neighbors, we'll reunite these children and re-establish our reputation as being a haven for people in need," Biden said after signing the orders.

Here's what they will do:

Create a task force that would reunify families: The task force will be chaired by the Department of Homeland Security secretary. The goal will be to find parents separated from their children under the former administration. The task force will also give regular reports to the President, including one containing recommendations.

Address the root cause of migration: This executive order will focus on providing support to Central America to stem the flow of migrants to the US-Mexico border and provide other pathways to migrate to the US without journeying north. This includes things like providing aid to combat corruption and taking a series of actions to restore the asylum process.

Review the legal immigration system: This order will work to promote immigrant integration and inclusion, according to the White House, and re-establish a Task Force on New Americans. It will also spur a review of the public charge rule which makes it more difficult for immigrants to obtain legal status if they use public benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps and housing vouchers.

Hours into his presidency, Biden moved to swiftly undo many Trump administration policies in a series of executive actions. But his administration has already faced legal hurdles in implementing those policies.

As opposed to what Abbott, the Whinging? Funny how no other border governor is complaining as much as Abbott.

DP. Here in the U.S., we say "whining." And Abbott has been doing anything but - he's been taking action as none of his previous pleas for help did one bit of good. As for other governors, Eric Adams has been quite vocal about not being able to handle any more illegal immigrants in his state, as has Pritzker - which is amusing since they've only received a tiny percentage of the millions Abbott has had to shoulder.

Clearly, you'd prefer for Abbott to just shut up and keep his head down as millions flow into his state. I'm very glad he's not about to do that.

They are but aren’t getting as much press. Here is a press release from the governor of Arizona - a democrat - that was released a month ago:

Governor Katie Hobbs Signs Executive Order Sending Arizona National Guard to Border Communities

Phoenix, AZ – One week after her letter to President Biden asking him to reassign the Arizona National Guard to re-open the Lukeville Port of Entry, Governor Katie Hobbs signed an Executive Order to carry out the next step in Operation SECURE, mobilizing the National Guard to southern Arizona. There, they will assist the Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies with enforcement activities, including fentanyl interdiction, analytical support, and human trafficking enforcement efforts.

“Yet again, the federal government is refusing to do its job to secure our border and keep our communities safe,” said Governor Katie Hobbs. “With this Executive Order, I am taking action where the federal government won’t. But we can’t stand alone, Arizona needs resources and manpower to reopen the Lukeville crossing, manage the flow of migrants, and maintain a secure, orderly and humane border. Despite continued requests for assistance, the Biden administration has refused to deliver desperately needed resources to Arizona’s border.”

The National Guard members will be stationed at multiple locations along the southern border, including near both the Lukeville Port of Entry and the San Miguel crossing.

Additionally, the Biden administration has failed to respond to Governor Hobbs’ request for reimbursement for border security spending.

A press release is not the same as Abbott and his constant whinging.

Funny how you neglect to mention Pritzker and Adams and their constant "whinging."

Instead of holding Abbot responsible for facing consequences of policies he doesn't support, take responsibility and make arrangements.

Why do you keep saying "they have to accept?" That is not what sanctuary city means. Yet it keeps being repeated over and over. It seems the entire GOP strategy is based on a fundamental misunderstanding and misrepresentation.

DP. Why do you insist that Abbott "has to accept" the millions of illegal immigrants flooding into Texas? What makes him "have" to but not any other governor?

This issue is absolutely the fault of Biden.
He has broken every metric when it comes to illegal immigration - encounters, releases into the US, migrant deaths, illegal drugs found in the US.
And, it began during his campaign when he encouraged migrants to "surge" the border. Then, signing an EO that there would be no deportations in his first 100 days. Then, overturning everything that was working to secure the border.

All of these actions were signals to migrants, and more importantly, the cartels, that he would not take enforcement of our southern border seriously.
The cartels have control of our border. They decide when and where migrants will cross. They take advantage of the chaos they have created to bring in got-aways and illicit drugs and contraband. And, they are making billions because of Biden's fecklessness.

Democrats won't sign it because it has major flaws, that's already been discussed several times in this thread. And no, Biden cannot craft law out of thin air. That's not how Executive Orders work, they have to have some basis and grounding in EXISTING law.

No, they aren't. Undocumented migrants pay their own rents, pay for their own food, and get billed for medical treatment. And EVERYONE gets free public school, you aren't expected to pay for that, either. But a big chunk of school funding comes out of local property taxes, which undocumented migrants pay via their rents, because any landlord with a clue bakes that into the cost buildup for setting the rent and pays it out of rental income. Note also that undocumented migrants are not eligible for any federal benefits. The only place where taxpayers end up on the hook is with people with asylum-seeker status, which is different from being an illegal alien. We have to house and feed them because the law says so. Republican HR 2 doesn't actually change that. And we can't just send them back because the law says we can't until they have a hearing to determine whether they can be deported or whether they are adjudicated as asylees. And there is a massive backlog because Republicans won't agree to add more judges and officials to speed up the hearings. HR 2 doesn't address that either. So what world are you living in, that you are completely oblivious to so many facts of law and reality?
