Thanks for this

Wow. Definitely not for everyone. A varsity athlete Eagle Scout with marksman training would seem to do well, or someone coming from an intense HS football or wrestling program may do well. And, of course, the desire to be in the military...

Definitely take a whole package of athletics, academics, and mental/physical endurance to be successful. A lot more dynamic skills are required here than any other academic institution.

Nope, a lot of better atheletes and acdemically superior kids don't want military.
SAT range only 1200-1420
I would say it's equivalent to T50 schools.

Comparing these schools to others is kind of comparing applies and oranges, though.

For one thing, the academies are the only institutions where if you can't run a mile in a certain time, or test positive for pot after spring break, or if underage fail a breathalyzer after going off post, or have bad acne or have been on adderall...the list of things to disqualify you or get you booted are countless.

(I just responded to the other SA thread on this board re nominations.)
My DC is applying and has everything except a nomination. She has interviewed with her congressperson's team, and we are just waiting for the decision. She also has an interview with one senator (senator's team) lined up; she has not heard from the other.

Anyone else's kid applying?

Do you know when they find out? I know a kid who is hoping for the Naval Academy, and I'm hopeful for them!

The irony is that the kids at the academies are the ones who will be serving all Americans, including the "theys" of the country.

Who are the people who want to keep comparing these niche schools to other schools?

It's a complicated process with so many moving parts. As others have noted, check out the Service Academies website for more info. and even rolling lists of self-reported acceptances. But in a nutshell, it takes a while for the WP admissions team to paint a picture of the incoming class, juggling nominations, athletic recruits, URMs, etc. For the DMV its especially complicated because there are so many super competitive candidates and only one person can come from a single congress person, but simply not getting the position that is for example set for Cardin, doesn't mean that you are out of luck. There are ways an academy can "find" a nomination for a stellar candidate (for example from a district with very few qualified applicants). It is not unheard of for example for two TJ kids from the same congressional district to end up both getting accepted. The first one as early as August/September, the second as late as April/May the following year.

People who don't like the military or are suspicious of them. People who see military service veterans as benefiting unfairly from a post-service "affirmative action" apparatus for education, jobs, etc. People who are intimidated by those who have survived the crucible of these academies and beyond. People who deep down are cowards. People who think the only recipe for success are perfect SAT scores, and recognizing that such a metric is hardly a requisite to be successful by any measure of the word (to include $) and academy grads prove just that over and over again, generation by generation.

Looks to me it's the other way around.
People are indifferent about service academies, but the service academy people want to compare it to other elite schools.

You slipped when you referred to "other elite schools." Academies are indeed elite. Why do you have such a chip on that shoulder?
