UF has tons of online classes. Like Covid but not. Strange especially in Florida.

UGA over UF if warm is a preference.

How would you compare it to Wisconsin, Florida and Maryland for general academics and student experience? DC is oos for all schools listed, so looking for more than the "whatever school is cheapest" post.

My DD ruled out two of these schools after visiting. The visits really helped. I think she is going to choose UGA.

Why UGA?

Wants a college town, large rah rah school with a lot going on. Wants a school that is somewhat selective. Prefers weather there to some other schools.

I think the online classes mainly affects the business classes. However, most of these classes still provide the option to attend in person. It's just that there is a space issue. A lot of kids seem to like the benefit of being able to re-watch the lectures. From what I understand, the situation is not as bad as it seems - many students are okay with it once they experience it.

UF is a huge college town with lots of school spirit. People get incredibly emotional about their school. Gator nation is almost like a culture in and of itself.

Of these choices, Florida is both the cheapest and the highest ranked.

What does the ranking mean?

UF is ranked #28 per latest USnews and #1 public university according to Wall Street Journal. I know rankings can be wonky but the dcurban crowd seems obsessed with these things.

The ranking is also apparent in how incredibly selective UF has become in the last fews years- this year in particular. I know of several NMF who got denied. UF claims to be holistic.

Where is selectivity in the us news formula?

DP - but people follow the rankings (especially those living in the DC area). So the better the rankings, the more people apply - making the school more selective.

Not sure that many people care. Those that do should learn what’s in the formula.

Did she find that Athens is a better college town than Madison?

Yes. She preferred Athens. Madison is larger and she didn’t like that the capitol was right near campus. She doesn’t love cities and it had a more urban feel.

Does UGA offer merit like Alabama?

I don't think they are nearly as generous with merit aid for out of state students.

No. They do but it’s very limited and the amount is much smaller than Alabama. It’s a much harder school to get into so I assume they don’t need to offer much.
