I reserve all judgment in absence of any meaningful evidence. I won't judge or castigate Gilman because there's no evidence of a cover up. I remember being a teen, both middle and upper schools, back in the 1990s and I know all the things that happened that kids never told teachers and teachers were often clueless. Nice and capable people who would never have been willing to cover up something like an abuse scandal. But kids are very capable of just not telling teachers anything. Don't you remember being a kid? I find it very plausible this Gilman teacher got away with his behavior for 15 years.

This, and it seems to be the same person posting again and again in this thread.

Yes exactly. Arguing against this person who claims to KNOW only causes him/her to repeat exactly what he/she said before. I think a previous poster is right that they may be q-anon. I’m super annoyed because this thread is important. Discussing possible school accountability in a reasonable way as evidence becomes available is also important. But this person keeps regurgitating the same stuff that they believe they KNOW, and they have taken this thread straight to the loony bin. I’m pretty much done with it.

As a member of a nearby Baltimore community, my heart goes out to all Gilman families. I can only imagine what you are all going through right now.

Actually, preventing the rape of children by teachers should be the most important thing here. Yet no conversation here about that. Why?

Well others have tried to say sane things about this, including the very helpful poster who shared their own abuse story. But you’re certainly not helping to steer the conversation to this productive end, you lunatic.

I certainly don’t blame any teenagers who heard rumors and didn’t report them, although I wonder if they did and if adults did. I’m following the story, and offering support to the community and especially to the boys who were abused and reported it. Thank God they did. They are heroes in a horrific story.

Current upper school parent— there were no rumors of the abuse until last month. Everyone was shocked. Bendann was very successful in manipulating his victims into silence.

The school openly allowed him to sleep over with students AGAINST school policy. The school clearly knew about it and did NOTHING. What kind of administrators allow teachers to sleep over with students with zero supervision by any other adult? Gilman already had a horrific recent history of student sex assault by teachers.

teachers are allowed to babysit just like in my sons public school, we use his teachers as sitters all the time. That’s not against school policy. Most schools I know allow that.

Most schools, both public and private, *do not* allow it for various reasons, including possible favoritism and other very legitimate concerns. I’d be shocked if there’s a public school system that doesn’t doesn’t have a prohibition on teachers and staff being employed by enrolled families outside of school. Which district are you in?

I did already, nutcase. I very early shared how I would change to educate my child about boundaries even among people who seem trustworthy. I also think schools need to set boundaries about teacher contact with students outside of schools. There are a lot of gray areas right now. Unfortunately, such changes will also get rid of many good interactions with good teachers outside of school, but it may be necessary. People might be more willing to discuss ways to protect our kids if you went away with your repetitive and completely unhelpful rants. Go away if you want to be helpful. Because nobody finds you helpful or believe you really care about our kids.

Schools that fail to enforce teacher student boundary policies must be held accountable.

We hire babysitters and house sitters from our kids schools all the time. The answer here is educate all parents and kids about being able to come to their parents and counselors about anything without being afraid or embarrassed. And to teach kids to advocate for themselves and not be afraid to speak out and speak up. You’re not going to stop pedophiles from getting jobs at schools, this guy had no criminal background at all.

No one should be allowed to hire teachers to spend one on one time with their kids out of school. It’s just good risk management.

I am not sure if it is fair for other kids in the same class even when there is no abuse. Wealthy parents hire teachers to tutor their kids all the time.

Please shut-up with the “it can happen anywhere” garbage. What has been happening at Gilman, happens only where school administration chooses to allow rumors of abuse/rape to go unreported to the police department. Schools have a LEGAL obligation to report POSSIBLE abuse of students. It’s NOT the school’s job to determine if a rumor has merit or not.

Gilman does not have trained investigators on its payroll. Gilman should have reported to police the FIRST rumor of their students getting alcohol from a teacher. They broke the law right there. Of course no one will be held accountable for their silence.

Who cares that the perpetrator was a former student, or that his father is well liked in the community? Apparently, administrators cared a lot about protecting the ongoing sexual abuse of its students. Someone (besides the rapist teacher) MUST be held accountable for this atrocity perpetrated on these young boys. Victims of sexual abuse typically need years and years of very high quality therapy. The police are begging other victims to please come forward. We all know, however, that most victims choose not to speak of their abuse. It’s just to painful and not worth the ordeal of going public with this sort of thing. May God give them strength. My heart breaks for what they endured.

There were not previous rumors of abuse/rape.

That you know of - the point is the school may have known or suspected inappropriate conduct at the very least with the drinking and close relationships. Enough to put a stop to it.

Exactly. Why would anyone admit to knowing about rumors of “beloved” teacher criminal activities?

Because it is a business and the administration has no interest protecting him -- unless his family is paying a big chunk of the school bills. He does not look like he has millions per year for the school.

Perhaps check out his father who was a very active board member for quite a while. You do not know why the administration may have been looking the other way. Men who volunteer to babysit school children are a huge red flag. Most people know that.

I agree that school teachers should not be allowed to work for parents outside school. It is just not fair for other kids whose parents don't have the kind of money. The appearance of favoritism is damaging enough.
