This. And also, are you saying these coaches are volunteering their time to give these kids extra help at no cost? The guys getting paid 30k a year if they have 2 teams are just out here saying "Family? Friends? Money? No Thanks! Quality time with my favorite 10 year old kid!" Be reasonable folks, just because it's unenforced doesn't mean it's legal or that it's even being done ethically. Just say you don't care about the fact that it happens, at least that's intellectually honest.

Why are you all acting like this is specific to Valor. I know a Herndon coach charging for privates that would use valor fields because it was more convenient. If coaches can get away with using a field at a time that it's not formally reserved they are going to.

If the field isn't permitted or being used, then a coach giving a private lesson has just as much right to space as any other pickup player. Share the field, etc.

Valor coaches kicking off pickup players for an alleged "practice" that's really a private for profit lesson does not comply with the field permit rules.

Oh please. A private lesson is obviously just that. One coach, one kid, a bunch of cones and balls etc.

if anyone ever tries to kick you off a field your kid is playing on for a private lesson, ask to see a copy of the permit. It should be in thaf individual's name. If its not, you have every right to stay.

No dog in this fight but my older ds played on a Valor team practicing on Fridays at that park. He said before their 6:30 practice, there were Valor coaches doing lessons on the field, like 1 coach and 1 player on half a field. When they tried to warm up on the "open" field, the coaches kicked them off.

He didn't know any of the coaches. They were there every week and not always the same coaches so the free field space must be a known perk offered to Valor coaches. Usually male, sometimes female, coaches.

This is frustrating to read. My dd's older CYA rec team only practiced on terrible grass fields.

CYA was given turf field permits by the County and then allowed Valor to use them for free instead of saving them for CYA kids, and Valor didn't even need them for practice space? We could have had 4-5 rec teams practicing on that wasted field space.

I don't know how long ago this was. But I coached my DD's CYA team last spring. For 2 practices a week you could reserve a turf field for one of those practices. If a coach chose a grass field for both practices it was because the day and time availability of the turf did not work for them.

Rec kids shouldn't be practicing on turf anyway. It should be reserved for higher level play. Grass field is fine for rec.

How much space did you get on turf? Last year when my ds played SYA rec only gave the older SFL age rec coaches one hour on turf once a week and they shared the practice field with three other older teams. It was very crowded. IT is annoying to hear that SYA had extra space kids could have been practicing on but they let random people run their personal business off it instead.

The County disagrees. It is really hard for orgs without rec leagues to get access to any county turf fields for practices. That's why the st james had so many problems with fields. Clearly Valor has found a loophole where financially they are separate from the rec leagues but they use the rec leagues field space. If Valor tried to get their own field space from the county, they would not get much or any b/c they do have their own rec league.

Not sure why the people who run CYA and SYA are OK with this as they are supposed to be running a program for rec sports and rec players. ($$$ changing hands???)

I see no issue with a coach trying to earn an extra dollar by private coaching kids from other teams. For example- a boy getting lessons from a girl team coach. I do have issues with a coach giving paid private lessons to a kid that they coach or currently coaching same age group. That just seems like a recipe for disaster (favoritism -> parents feeling pressured to pay to play). Just wanted to make sure that we are all pointing our fingers at the latter.
