Physicians Assistant yelling “HELP ME” while stealing a CitiBike ?

They redocked her bike with her sitting on it, and then 20 secs into the video one of the guys swipes the QR code with his own phone. They understood these were the two steps necessary to cancel her rental and re-rent the bike under his own name.

I suppose you could argue he misunderstood that you can’t “reserve” a Citibike. But, the fact that he went through the two steps above argues that he understood how it works very well.

I do think she will be able to work again, for the same hospital even.

But I also think that for a long time, she will wonder to herself if any patient or colleague she encounters believes her to be a racist and a thief. And she'll never know if someone is responding to her on the basis of her actual actions, or based on a belief of who she is based on lies that were posted about her online.

Reputation is tricky like that. I do think the people who spread lies and misinformation in ways that damaged this woman's reputation unfairly should be held responsible. It should not be considered a small thing to do this because it can damage a person for a long time.

Well, she can rest assured that those are uneducated morons who get their news from Twitter blowhards like Monique Judge. They are uninformed people whose opinions she shouldn't worry about. Plus, if they are in the hospital they probably have bigger fish to fry than worry about the reputation of the person caring for them at the moment.

Bellevue serves a population that is largely not white. If I worked there and there were rumors about me being a racist or a white supremacist or someone who endangers black people, or there were calls for my treatment of people of color as patients to be investigated, even if I knew these claims were false, I would definitely worry it would impact may ability treat patients, make them feel comfortable, etc. These are essential parts of the PA's job, and the people spreading lies about her online, using her full name, could actually be destroying the trust that might otherwise exist between the PA and her patients.

It's easy to say "oh just don't worry about those people think" when your job does not involve daily interaction with the general public in a capacity that requires trust and honest communication.

Eh, they will forget her name next week. Most people even on here are just calling her the PA. I'm not minimizing the effect this is having on her, I just don't think long term reputational harm from her patients isn't a big concern. The suckers who fell for this scam will be on to the next outrage in a few days and the PA, whatever her name is, will be forgotten. As it is they think her name is Karen.

A relatively small percentage of people saw the video, and an even smaller percentage of people give a crap about what actually transpired. You probably won't get anyone to agree with you because people who waste several hours a day on social media (ditto for politics) think that everyone else is doing the same thing. They're not. They're doing other stuff that is more fulfilling, or they're caught up in the rat race and don't care about the insanity going on in your head. People like this constantly seek out drama via social media or so called news websites. They are filling a void in their sad lives and it's basically a never ending cycle.

The video is all over the internet as is her name.

For people who are looking for it or care. Most people don’t. The few people trying to tarnish her name will be disappointed.

If this was a different person would you still think that. Her name is out there to google. People care. If it was no big deal why was she suspended from her job?

Sure some people care but they are insignificant losers. So what? She will get paid out of this. She’s already up well above $100,000.

That’s for attorneys (like people donated assuming it would go to attorneys fees). It won’t replace income or become a college fund.

I mean, no point arguing in here if there’s reputational damage. My original point was that she will always wonder if people think these things, because there’s a chance they will. Sure, many people will have no idea or care, but if there are defaming lies about you on the internet, it will impact your ability to work and function in the world, because you never know when someone might Google you.

Or maybe she makes a second career out of this becoming an advocate for people unfairly maligned. Lemonade out of lemons. Only a few crazies refuse to face the facts and continue to fault her. Like Sandmann, she will likely be successful in her lawsuits clearing her name.

People usually don’t become doctors, nurses and PAs on a whim. It’s not like answering phones at the hospital. She likely has a calling for this field (especially to endure it through Covid) and doesn’t want to just switch her life around to become an activist because of this.

Or maybe she just doesn't have to serve the underpriveliged anymore and put up with the likely stress and abuse. She can just move on to a concierge medicine practice where she will be appreciated and better paid. The type of people who think she was horribly mistreated by social media nut bags. Her career is hardly over because people like Monique Judge exist.

Her GoFundMe states she feels strongly in favor of social justice. But maybe she feels she’s not safe from people who believe Judge.

Seems like they both believed they rented the bike first, and decided it was the hill they were going to die on.

Invented hoaxes like this have to exist because the demand for racist incidents to go viral is greater than the supply.

Actually, I just watched a video and a guy dispelled her proof video.

He went to a location with CitiBikes and did a video of the process. His friend rented a bike. He then tried to rent the same bike at the same time as his friend and his receipt type matched hers. The big difference: his friend's screenshot receipt showed the bike ID (like hers) and fees (unlike hers).

The guy making the video showed his receipt and it matched this woman's: bike ID and $0.00 as the total because he was unable to rent the bike since it was rented by his friend first.

White women remain problematic.

All this proves is that it's possible for two people to think they rented the same bike.

She is a Citibike member (per her receipts) so she isn't charged for rentals under a certain time period. So it would be normal for her initial rental to ring up as $0.00 -- she will only be charged if she keeps the bike past the window or, if it's an e-bike, she would be charged at a per minute rate for the time she has the bike.

This video speaks to the idea that both people could have believed they rented the same bike, and thus it was a misunderstanding and no one was "stealing" a bike. It does not justify the way these men harassed her (physically pushing her off the bike, laughing at her, calling her baby a slur, etc.). If it really was a misunderstanding, it could have been resolved by using words, suggesting they compare receipts on their phones to clear it up. Not by pushing the bike back into the dock, surrounding her, and heckling and laughing at her.

Simply being a white woman is not "problematic." The desire to blame racism on white women as a group is misogynist and honestly does a disservice to addressing racism, it's just another way to let white men and the people who actually control institutions off the hook. White women are an easy scapegoat, especially if they are are not wealthy or beautiful or powerful in other ways. They've just become the whipping boy for white supremacy.

Did he re-dock the bike or just try to check it out at the same time? Link?

These “refutations” always have some critical element of the story missing.

That this young man hasn't stepped up with the receipts and to clear his name is really all the proof anyone needs at this point. He's wrong and he knows it. Why people are so desperately trying to explain it as a misunderstanding is bizarre.

Yeah, complete silence from them definitely adds to the impression that they set out to prank her for social media, or they actually were trying to take the bike from her.

I mean, your last sentence pretty much dispels any value in your viewpoint.

But even playing along - if she thought she rented it at the same time, how is that “stealing” the bike? And how did she end up sitting on the bike if he had already rented it?

+1. Still playing along, even if they both rented it at the same time, she obviously got to the bike first. She was sitting on it when they forcibly redocked her.

Because there is literally NEVER a circumstance where is there is NO racism, when white people are involved. And I say this AS a white woman. I AM a former racist.

The only racism that happened here was by four black men against a white woman. They chose her for a reason.

Ah yeah, it appears that one of the posters is infatuated with the PA. She sees herself as a victim and loves to feel the pain of the PA. It wouldn't surprise me if she trys to interject herself into the situation in real life. Hopefully she can find a hobby like pickleball or this could get ugly!

I can see why you are struggling with other people's perspective on this. They are employing something called "empathy" -- if you have time this week, look it up. Could open up a whole new world for you.
