CORONAVIRUS/COVID-19 NEW MEGA THREAD

The third NBA player tested positive for coronavirus. Okay I get that they were exposed, but in theory they are young and very healthy. Why are they testing these guys if tests are so scarce? The cynic in me thinks they're getting the rich celebrity treatment.

The patient in Seattle that treated with "cold medicine" and never developed a cough. What do we think that was? Dayquil? Tylenol Cold and Flu? Mucinex? Have a few options in my cart and want to poll...

Cynic?

The realist in you thinks that rich celebrities are getting preferential treatment.

Remdesivir is/was always a shot in the dark.

There are very few antivirals that work on respiratory viruses like flu, coronavirus, rhinovirus, adenovirus. Tamiflu survives because it's the only one, despite some potentially large side effects and the fact *it barely works at all* (reduces course of disease by ~10% / 12 hours).

What's needed is a vaccine. And that will take time.

I'm not sure I understand your problem. They were more than just "exposed." They were tested later and they were positive. That's a good use of testing resources.

There were proto-vaccines for SARS that were developed but not fully tested and rolled out. We already have a jumping off point for a covid-19 vaccine.

Eh. Vaccine development today is a decades old science. We know how to do it. You're not getting a big head start from a SARS vaccine.

The hard part is validation, and ramping up production. We're going to have a vaccine in 12-18 months barring some very strange circumstances. But it will be hard to go faster than that. Not impossible. But hard.

Good. That’s gross that the feverish reporter even went there in the first place. Wth were they thinking???!

According to the people who lie dozens of times per day, about everything, as part of a calculated strategy.

As an avid follower of all things corona, I can't believe I missed the first cases in Cuba. Three Italian tourists last Wednesday and now there is a fourth, not specified.

The Cuban government has advised residents to make their own masks, and says it has sufficient medicine to treat a large number of patients. Borders remain open.

What does it mean be can’t be treated for the virus until they know the results? I obviously feel awful for this family and totally understand the desire for a test result. But will that really change the course of treatment?
