Travel Soccer teams around NOVA let's discuss

So our team will be competing in the DC United cup in August (all clubs hosting tournaments in the area are enthused, I'm sure). What about the teams invited does anyone on here know about them. I'm thinking criteria like top ranked, DC United affiliation, etc. Apparently they're inviting USDA teams. It's their inaugural tournament or else I'd be looking at the history of the tournament myself. My son's team is NVSC(not sure why others on here don't like to state their club's name ((exception:VYS))). Any inside info would be appreciated by myself, and any soccer obsessed dad's on here as well.

Looks like it'll be a while before they announce brackets and so forth. They have several tiers, from "Academy" to local level.

Younger years building confidence is most important. Much better to be top player on lower team---gets confidence to try things out, is not stressed out, becomes a leader. As the blurb above stated, kid can't focus on technique and fun when he is in a pressure-cooker environment in the younger years. This is why players drop the sport.

I coach travel soccer (U13), and have also had two of my own kids go through this exact situation. My kid used the promotion to a better team as motivation to continue to improve. Yes there was stress, but that is always part of playing a competitive sport.

I would encourage the kid to practice and play with the better players. At U11 the kid has already had 2 or 3 years of travel soccer. Unless there is some specific concrete reason (i.e. horrible coach or very limited game time) to avoid training and playing with better players, it will do more to further the kids development to train with better kids (all else being equal).

I agree with this. It's a hard question to answer without knowing much about the kid, potential coaches, or teams, but I don't see why people assume a kid would automatically have his confidence hurt just because he's not a star on a team. Many kids of all ages thrive with the sort of new challenges a step up in competition brings.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I posted that question. Yeah, my son is sensitive. My son does feed off the other kids valuing him. However, my son loves competition and top teams motivate him. It's just so troubling to be on such a huge cusp. It's not like he's bottom of A team and training with A and B. It's that he's on the bottom of B so there is 20+ kids "better" than him. However, if he goes to 3rd team. There's 20 kids "worse" than him. The coach says he will play to win so playing time is not guaranteed. Very tough situation. I think I will push forward with the B team and hope for the best because I can always move down I feel half way through the season. I will NEVER be able to move up as I think most of you can appreciate doesn't happen. But again, I appreciate all the feedback and please continue the comments as I still have time to change my mind. : )

Another vote for playing with the higher quality team. Your concern that "20 kids" are better issue is just a temporary concern. In two short years when they get to U13 (11v11) there will be 36 kids total playing on the top two teams and (assuming your kid just keeps his relative place in the pecking order) he will be at the very upper end of the 18 players on the B team roster.

What brings you and your astonishing wisdom to page 154 of the NOVA soccer thread?

I have a daughter that plays soccer and I did find this thread last year when I was legitimately looking at different soccwr clubs. After I read through the craziness, I come back and every now and then and troll the stupid sounding users, if I have to be honest.

This tournament starts on August 17. And it doesn't appear to be the kind of pre-season tournament that you would want to just show up for without a lot of practice beforehand. So practice for these participating clubs will start...when?

My kids play soccer in Germany on their break. They come back stronger for it than if they were playing for their "elite" team. The coach doesn't punish them if they miss preseason because they are better for it.

Just saw u10 game, Arlington boys slide tackled about 30 times. Disgusting, such bad coaching and bad parenting (as the parents were yelling at the ref for calling 2 PKs when in the box). Where can one find a true focus on player development and technique? If it exists, please tell me.

Which team? Played the blue team and parents complimented my kids after the game. Very civil on walk to the car. One boy told my son he was a great player which meant a lot coming from another kid.

^^the crazies seem to populate the higher teams in that club. They are the better politicians.
