My almost 8 year old daughter still calls me mommy. Lately, I've noticed that many of her same age friends use the word mom when talking about their mothers. Personally, I don't mind her calling me mommy at all...In fact I'd be happy if she called me that until she turns 30 But of course, I don't want her to be considered a freak among her peers.
Just wondering what the typical age is that most children transition from mommy to mom? |
Mine stopped last year when he was around 5, turning 6.
Even as an adult, I referred to my mother as "my mom" but still said, "Mama" when talking to her or calling her on the phone. Never used "Mommy." Although she passed away several years ago, she'll always be "Mama" in my heart.
I think mine were pretty much using mom around 6-7 but mommy still would slip out sometimes for a few years after that.
I still call my mother "mommy" and I'm 35.
|
Me, too. 46.

I once read one of those corny, sappy plaques that said something like: "mothers do not mark the passing of years by birthdays but by the change from 'mama' to 'mommy' to 'mom.' "
Whatever. I don't think there would be anything freakish about her continuing to call you "mommy." I know lots of adults who still call their mothers that. If she notices it and feels pressure, she will switch if she wants. My older 2 stopped "mommy" at 5 or 6, but my youngest rotates between mama, mommy, and mom. |
I called my parents Mommy and Daddy until the day they both died (I was 31 and 40). I hope my children call me Mommy forever!
I don't remember my DD calling me mommy past 5 or so. Now, at 8, she usually calls me by my first name. It irks my mom to no end but I don't really mind. It is my name after all.
DS stopped at about 5 or 6. DD1 stopped at about 9 or 10. DD2 still does and she is in college
My parents divorced when I was 5 and I didn't see my father often after that. I still called him Daddy until he died a few years ago. I never made the progression from Daddy to Dad because I was rarely around him. So my DS started calling me Mom when he was 6 and I see that as a good sign.
About 9. A sad day that was.
5 and 6 year olds both still call me mama. Or by my first name if they are being wise asses.
8 and 6 yo both still call me Mommy.
My SIL calls her parents "Mommy and Daddy" and refers to them as such to me and to others. I think it's ridiculous. She's 40!
