Cheating Scandal Triggering TJ Change

Anonymous
These math essay questions should be having similar patterns, so it should be a coincidence that the kids saw the question that they practiced. If you google for Math questions you will get questions that could be in the next exam(hopefully lottery doesn’t go thru), this is no big deal.
Usually these math questions are like 2 rabbits are placed in an isolated island, in one month they become 4, in 2 months they become 8... find the number of rabbits after so and month. This question can be asked with penguins instead of rabbits. If the exam is predictable change the test to grade the kids, don’t just replace it lottery.

If a kid had to prep and/or cheat to get into TJ...then he/she would probably be miserable at TJ just trying to keep up with the kids that didn't prep/cheat. Would be better served being the cream of the crop at their base school rather than trying to fake it with the TJ kids. Also, elite colleges don't want to fill their incoming class with high numbers of TJ kids because they want a better distribution, so coming from TJ is probably a disservice. If it were me, I'd rather have my kid run the tables at his base school.

There is a good chance that the best student in every race will not make it to TJ with the proposed merit lottery system. It would be great injustice to the best student.

For example, if two students applied for admission with one has a 3.52 GPA with Algebra 1 and the second student with 3.95 GPA with Algebra 1.

What would happen if the second student was not picked in the lottery and the second student is from African American race? Great injustice to the second student and the lottery system fails to address the diversity issue.

My suggestion is

How about having different admission tests per region and restricting each region with 70 students? AAP Students need to have GPA 3.6 and non-AAP students GPA 3.6 with application fee $350 (free for free or reduced school meal). So that the best students will make it to TJ while improving diversity per region. Also, add TJ boot camps and TJ Prep club every week in all the Middle schools. Middle school teachers/coaches should encourage the students who attends TJ boot camps and TJ Prep club by giving great recommendations to TJ admissions. If the student attend TJ Prep clubs for 2 years in middle school, the student has real passion for TJ/STEM. The application fee may be utilized for improving the base school’s faculty.

How can TJ be so stupid to repeat the same questions?

Were they the same questions, or the same kind of questions with different numbers? eg an intersection of a parabola and a line on a graph problem, Pythagoras theorem problem and so on. At mathcounts you see the same kinds of problems come up again and again, if a car is travelling at 60 mph north and another car is travelling at 20 mph south on the same road etc etc, and can practice them if you know they often ask this kind of question.

They didn’t know what the questions would be, I think, they just did the best they could to help the kids prep. Guessing the Curie families didn’t expect that Curie had somehow actually compromised the exam!

There is prep and then there is PREP on steroids

Equating the 12 hour FCPS class to the 16 month long class Curie offered is laughable. The FCPS and several of the other prep companies offer what is essentially practice for a long-timed test. Many of those students have never taken a 4 hour times test. It made sense to expose them to the what it would be like. These classes also did not give the students a test bank of Quant W questions.

Curie involved literally 1,000s of hours of work preparing exclusively and solely for the TJ test. And multiple current TJ students have said that the prep company HAD A COPY of the test. Maybe it wasn’t word for word the same questions, but the same drawings/figures were used between the various TJ tests.

The bottom line is that the decision makers in FCPS (TJ principal, Brabrand, etc) are committed to changing the current system and going to a lottery. They created a system that rewarded extreme “prep”, realize it now and will fix it for future classes.

FCPS has learned with AAP and TJ that no matter how many millions of dollars they spend to make a test secure, cheaters find a way to cheat. They have decided that for TJ it is best to get rid of the tests that advantage cheaters. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. The lottery with a screening benchmark gets them out of a perpetual need to spend millions changing the test to foil cheaters.

Prepping isn’t cheating, does Michael Jordan come to the court straight out of his bed and play? Before the game every team knows their opponents, prepare for their weaknesses and strengths and then play accordingly. In baseball pitchers and catchers meet before every series to plan on how to pitch to different hitters. There are scouts in every Mlb game to find about hitters and pitchers. Even fielders have positions in their caps. Before these prep centers, I and few friends taught our kids once every week taking turns, this was as good as prep center. Phil Jackson won’t say “Mike, Just go in and play”, then he is not doing his job. Prepping is there every where, just be prepared as much as you can.

They can change it all they want and it will be struck down.

TJ doesn't prepare the Quant-Q, nor does FCPS. It is an exam that is developed and distributed for use by another company in multiple forms.

We should institute a lottery system for top universities because too many white parents cheat and bribe to get their kids into them.

Thereby all the cheating and bribing disadvantages URMs the right kind of minority. We should be so outraged because URMs’ seats are being stolen by hundreds of even thousands of whites applicants who are unqualified.

Well, get rid of affirmative action too. Wait, it is going away.
