For those trying to dictate to others that Kobe is not a hero. STFU. As you have crowed, definitions matter. And he CAN be a hero to others. That doesn’t mean he has to be YOUR hero.

People are expressing a dissenting view. As long as they are respectful about it, no they don't have to STFU.

I don't really blame the news outlets. When a sports icon is involved, all bets are off. I think news orgs generally try to be considerate about reporting names before families have been notified.

Didn't he die delivering relief supplies in Nicaragua or something?

Must have been leaked by his staff so he is just deflecting.

Doesn’t matter - other news outlets knew, but chose not to report it initially.

Except rumors were already all over Twitter and people were wondering if it was hoax. Better to actually know than to wonder. Cops need to work under a new model, they could have easily informed quicker.

People? So what if “people” were wondering if it was a hoax. I did too before it was confirmed and only TMZ was reporting it. It is more important for the families to know than for me to know for sure.

The fact is the cops need to notify the family before their kids/family hear about it on Twitter.

The cops need to do a better job.

That is why the cops are blaming TMZ, it's a red herring and you fell for it hook, line and sinker.

Do you work for TMZ, you dip$hit?

No LEO and I know better than you.

You’re a disgrace to your profession. And a disgrace of a human. 9 people died. It’s not your personal entertainment.

It is the job of LEO to notify family quickly and they didn’t.

That is not TMZ’s fault.

They don’t owe ghouls like you anything. Are you a family member or personally involved in funeral arrangements?

I'm in LA and we are a basketball family whose DD has played against GiGi and at this point I've turned off the news because it's just too intense.

All of LA is going through a huge crisis. Kobe used his talent and fame to do a lot of great things around here, so many are not just mourning the celeb/athlete but also the man who was such a positive force in so many ways.

The Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park area, where his Mamba sports facility is, is in deep grief. They had the Borderline shooting followed by the Woolsey Fire, and now this.

Want to say that the LA Times online is free today re their Kobe coverage and if anyone wants to get into the weeds, it's going to be the most detailed.

Nope. People are stating as fact he doesn’t meet the definition of a hero. Go back and read the last two pages. It’s not a “dissenting view” to claim he doesn’t meet the definition of a hero. And when posters even said - people can have different opinions - the shrews yet again claimed that definitions matter and he wasn’t a hero. So yes, STFU that he wasn’t a hero. He is to SOME, he doesn’t have to be to YOU.

+1 We don’t all share the same heroes. No one has to agree that he is their hero, but stop claiming he can’t be a hero to others.

LAPD and LA County Sheriff both had grounded their choppers due to fog.

This is just tragic. I am not a basketball fan but deeply saddened for the families.

I’m wondering if we need more regulations on recreational helicopter use. Six passengers died just last month in the Hawaii crash. I don’t have the answers but I wouldn’t be going up in one.

Kobe Bryant
Gianna Bryant (his 13-year-old daughter)
John Altobelli (Gianna's coach)
Keri Altobelli (John's wife)
Alyssa Altobelli (Coach's daughter and Gianna's teammate)
The Pilot

There's 3 more unlisted.

Local paper reported one of those three was another coach Christina Mauser, she was a school coach and also assistant coach to Kobe in the youth program.

New victims confirmed -
Ara Zobayan - The Pilot
Sarah Chester (Sarah's mom)
Payton Chester (Gianna's teammate)

Yes, my husband has expressed an interest in taking helicopter tours on vacation and I’ve told him he will not get me in one of those nor do I want him taking our kids. I agree it’s still unlikely to crash but it’s a risk I don’t need to take.

How do you get to your vacation destination... Do you drive? Lotta folks die in automobile accidents every day. Do you fly? One could just as easily say getting on a Boeing 737 is a risk you don't need to take either.

I’m not saying it’s rational. I’m just saying it’s a risk/reward that isn’t worth it to me. Obviously for others it’s worth it to them. Giving up driving a car will impact my life a lot more than forgoing helicopter rides.

Time for some regulation on Social "Media". We are apparently losing all human decency. People's tragic deaths are a scoop and celebrities and public figures rush in a frenzy to publicize their condolences and grief.
