The truth is that bullying and racism exist in all private and public schools. As a mixed race foreigner who lived in multiple countries, I have always had to adjust because I have never been part of the established majority in any given country.

Pick great schools, period. Bethesda has the best schools. Seriously, MCPS are not created equal. I know, because we moved around and I compared schools. I also have friends in various school clusters with whom I compare schools.

The rest is about raising your kids to brush off micro-aggressions and self-advocate when they encounter overt racism. You will support and accompany them on that path.

What makes the schools in Bethesda the best schools? Do they have the best facilities? Do they have the best teachers?

You could not pay me to send my children to Bethesda. They are ranked the most entitled/snobby in some survey a few years back. It is terrible and judgment isn't based on substance. Think Kavanaugh. But times 1000.

20901, 20910, 20912. Blair is a great school because it's not just two races, but more like a rainbow with all shades and variations. There are others in the area. It's all the same Honors/AP curriculum.

DP. I would recommend Blair to OP specifically because of its strong MSP and the phenomenally Kenny Smith. Your child will not get a more amazing teacher and (non-parent) role model/mentor in MCPS. He is transformative!

Who is Kenny Smith?

Lucky that is not how it works, you have to pay a premium to not live in the eastern half of the county. The decision is already made for people like you where you will live.

Not quite right. There are lots like me who live on the east side by choice. And it is a play on words when I say you couldn't pay me to send my children to schools in Bethesda. But lots of others think the same way.

I think when you say "people like you" you are saying 'people without money' don't have options. Which kind of proves my point, don't you think? You assume I don't have money and seek to look down on me for it. I mean, you aren't correct, but it is how you make sense of someone (by how much money they make) who doesn't live in Bethesda. But that is what I meant when I said people were entitled and snobby and like Kavanaugh but x1,000.

I agree with the PP who suggested Blair. It's a good balance.

I hear you OP. My daughter was a minority at her ES and was bullied and ignored because of her skin color. She loved to write and her writing journal was vandalized with racial slurs and vulgarity. We went to the school and they did nothing. I watched her cry as she erased all the awfulness from her stories because she loved them and wanted to save them. It was heartbreaking.

Lots is a bit of a stretch considering the nicest neighborhood in Silver Spring west side is about as expensive as the entry level neighborhoods out west. Coupled to the countless title one and focus schools which by their definition have mostly poor people. Your utopia is a spin you tell your self to feel better about your choices. Better hope billy gets the enrichment programs to be in with “better students” or else you’ll truths will come crumbling down.
