FCPS teacher salaries--pathetic

Good teachers should be paid at least double what they currently earn. They are inspiring the next generation. First year attorneys at major law firms who do nothing to help society earn at least $150k a year. First year teachers who foster a love of learning and create great citizens earn $47k in fcps. Society has messed up priorities.

Two teacher household here.

Where do you live?

Not around here. The only people who can afford to be teachers are those from wealthy families.

Exactly. The poster only knows teachers around here. There may be some very good ones from the lower middle class (in fact they may be excellent choices for some of the students we are gaining from those classes). However, they will not be able to afford to live here. Those teachers would be better for the lower end students and might actually be the ones to help close the "achievement gap". But they will not be coming here.

But will they be able to afford Arlington for $5000 more in salary or Loudoun for slightly less? I don't think so.

Ok. That's a fairly expensive area, is it not? You say you wouldn't have been able to afford where you live if you had started off as a teacher and that's probably true. You would have chosen to live somewhere else like most teachers do.

No one said teacher salaries were the only reason schools need funding. Stop being simplistic. Read the budget or Garza's letter and you'll see that she addresses class sizes, ESOL, etc. But the fact that a rich county like this can't afford to pay it's teachers at the level of other area schools is ridiculous -- particularly given the gargantuan class sizes we're expecting them to handle.

Again, it appears the only thing that will work is a noticeable deterioration of the school system and it's reputation. When people's houses start losing value because know one wants to come here to have their kids jammed into classes like sardines and taught by overworked, underpaid teachers, perhaps then Fairfax County residents will wise up. Until then I have very little sympathy for all the whining and demanding from parents in this area. Everyone wants their children to be challenged and taught at their level and learning Chinese in elementary school, but God forbid anyone is asked to chip in for it. You don't get cadillac schools or teachers for peanuts.

Hopefully, you are not an English teacher.

OMG. Comments like this just irk me to no end. Who gives a shit in this forum. You are just a jackass!

Believe me, we are screaming and crying to admin and gatehouse that we need classroom resources, class sizes, pacing guide changes...but since no one is saying, "Your class sizes are great, shut up and deal", I don't feel the need to constantly say to the public, "No, you don't understand...they really are too big to be effective with low level learners."

Trust me though, the conversations absolutely are happening behind the scenes in staff meetings, teacher forums, and county wide staff surveys.

And I guess my point is why pay teachers more when they already can't do their job effectively. Fix the problems that allow them to do their job effectively first. Paying teachers more at this point won't result in better teaching. There are underlying issues that prohibit teachers from teaching well despite how much money they make.

And pay the BOS and School Board will? The fish rots from the head down!

YOU non-teacher is the one who needs to stop complaining. Move out of FCPS if you feel it is so bad. Stop overworking and overwhelming our teachers with your BS and over crowding our classrooms when you do not want to be here. MOVE!

I appreciate and know how much you give to our children. I think you deserve the large raise before BOS and School Board. --I will take this moment to educate the teacher bashers, who constantly show their ignorance, the BOS and School Board are part time jobs not the teachers.-- I know how much the majority of our teachers work. I realize much of the money you earn goes to supplies for your classrooms so that our kids can have what they need. I have seen you give your lunch or your money to children who need it because their slack ass parents don't give a damn. Teacher bashers move! Go overcrowd another school district and leave us alone! You are not welcome here! I will no longer keep my mouth shut as you trash our teachers. They don't deserve it and you don't deserve to be listened to. Teachers I will support you, do support you and will always support you. You are with my children more waking hours than I. I do set the bar high and I do believe in it takes a village to raise good kids. I will treat you with respect and dignity when problems arise and I do expect the same from you. Thank you teachers!

Who are these assholes who begrudge teachers higher pay? Seriously who are you people?
I bet you are the ones with kids who talk back, and waste everyone's time in class.

I didn't complain about teachers. Rather I said teachers should stop. Perhaps you should find a different job if you are unhappy. BTW, I am a teacher!

$150,000 out of law school is ridiculous. No wonder people hate lawyers. That can't possibly be a typical salary. Engineers and social workers are still making $50,000 or less out of school.

Are you moving there too? I hope so since all this talk is about teachers being able to afford to live where they work.
