BASIS DC to open in 2012-2013

RIGHT. But the poster is than dissing THE SCHOOL for posters on this board not answering the questions sufficiently. Ask away, but don't get mad when you don't get fulfilling answers here. Duh.

Just saying, someone is hyping on an anonymous board AND THEN acting offended when others ask for some substance. Dumber than shit and not exactly inspiring confidence.

We get that there's some Scottsdale-flavored frosting here, but is there any cake? Scottsdale is a resort/golf/shopping wealthy adjunct to Phoenix. DCPS is majority Title One.

Yes, it's very exciting that kids in Scottsdale have a H.S. which Jay Matthews' Challenge Index loves even better than TJ. But, the BASIS proposed for DC is going to average < 50% proficiency in 5th grade and no guaranteed school at all for the vaunted AP decathlon - should the kids even make it that far (because the "how tos" of that are about as clear as mud).

It's just so unreasonable, isn't it? To ask for actual information - from the very boosters who can't seem to shut up about it.

What is your problem? If you are judging a school as "confidence inspiring" or not based on anonymous boosters then good luck to you. You seem to have a burr in your side about Basis, or charters, or Mary Siddall or something we can't even imagine.

I was thinking the poster had a bee in their bonnet.

No-one is dissing the school. There are some BASIS boosters here. That's fine, it's free after all. But if you're going to raise questions (which you do, inherently, by the great claims you're making) then you should have some answers.

It's not up to us to find this Mary person and ask her. If you're going to make a claim about the school, then back it up when people ask about it. Otherwise you really have no good reason to get offended.

cultists get offended with anything perceived as challenging the divinity of their cause.

Another acceptable answer would have been "I don't know"
but the cultist wants to cut off anything but worshipful conversation.

^^^^What is WITH this trying to equate Basis with a cult? I think some people are feeling super threatened.

RIght - like parents would be threatened by the prospect of a really good school opening in DC.

I would like BASIS, or any good school, to succeed. Part of that is winning parents' confidence upfront and that isn't happening so much here.

What you have here in DC is a bunch of parents who had high hopes when Michelle Rhee came in with all her promises to make DC the highest performing system in the country by sheer force of will and bullying teachers to teach harder or get out.

Can't blame parents for wanting something more than big promises and little substance.

I hope Basis succeeds, for many reasons
I just think a principal is a tricky job, and not easy without training

What happened to Facebook page for Basis DC? I thought I saw one. The basisschools.org site doesnt have any links to DC that I could find. Can't find much on Siddall on FB either.

I signed the petition to bring it to DC a while back. It would be nice to know if they plan to go ahead or when they might make a decision to go ahead.

I think something like 120. 480 in grades 5 - 8 next year is what sticks in my mind
