Right?! As someone who enjoys doing, but is not particularly talented at sports, I love they are adding this kind of option! |
If that’s the plan, I think that’s fantastic. My DS plays a different sport at a different WCAC school. He’s an outstanding player and has gotten a good amount of playing time on the JV team. He has played travel in his sport since early elementary and would love to possibly play D3 in college. But, he’s already stressed about making varsity next year given how few spots there are, how many juniors were cut this year, and how competitive the level of play is. He would be thrilled if his school offered an option like this. I really wish more of the WCAC schools would consider this. |
What about the Heights? Do they play the lower level WCAC teams? |
For football? |
For football? |
Yes, for football. |
I only think they are doing this as a one-off because of the volume of GC transfers coming to SJC with the new coach. I assume the kids transferring are their best players, so now they are likely immediate starters. |
They don't have a football team. |
| Basketball announced the same 2-team model last week. |
It's not a one-off--the change was announced long before the GC coach was fired. And the basketball team is doing the same thing for next season. |
There are a couple of issues going on here. First, by labeling the team as a "varsity" team, you allow for seniors to be listed on that roster and allow them to play. Seniors can't play on JV so it would have to be managed in some way to ensure that seniors don't play on JV. Thus, instead of a senior just sitting on the bench never to see the field on the true varsity. So I sort of get the view but at the end of the day that team will not be playing on homecoming or have very many fans outside of parents. It is what it is. Second, there has been lots of rumblings at some private schools. Not so much at WCAC schools at this point but at various other private schools (at least in Philly) from alumni donors with kids in the school upset that their kids aren't seeing the field - not just football - because of scholarship/recruited players coming in. The rumors is that some of these kids are decent to good and be able to player (or have been replaced) by kids that wouldn't get into the school but for being recruited. Just a guess but this is an attempt at placating something like that. |
| I should add, I have no idea if that is going to lead SJC to modeled after IMG but they didn't purchase the nursing home across the street with all those quasi-dorm like rooms for nothing. |
Why? (Your enthusiasm for the vague "this kind of option" is sus. Methinks you are sjc marketing.) |
That building is for admin offices and housing for faculty/staff because the local COL is so expensive. |
Has this all been approved by the WCAC? I can’t imagine a school saying they are making a V2 football team and they will be playing in the Metro division and that be the end of discussion. The Capital and Metro Divisions both have 5 teams each, so will this potential addition change the divisions at all? |
