| Can someone explain to me how IMG actually works and the way that the school could actually be converted to an IMG model? |
|
I think this entire thread is based on the wrong premise and a misunderstanding of what SJC football is planning to do.
A person I know who is close to the AD said that what is actually happening is the following: - Varsity 1 team: no change...this team will continue to play in the WCAC "A" league (Gonzaga, Dematha, GC and McNamara) plus a national schedule...the same thing they have been doing for at least 6+ years - New V2 team: call it an elevated JV team that will now play some Varsity games in the WCAC "B" league...BI, PVI, O'Connell...as well as JV games against the A League schools I think the GC transfers had nothing to do with the change in the SCJ football model, and everything to do with the GC coach moving to SJC. |
| So basically, they now have the same kind of program as other schools with 3 football teams. The difference is instead of calling it a “freshman” football team, a “JV” team, and a Varsity team, they have 2 JVish teams and a Varsity. One JV team will be mostly freshman, and to get creative on the schedule, they are building their own non conference schedule for the other “Varsity” (but really JV) team, since there isn’t really a league for that. Calling it Varsity allows them to keep seniors in the team, and is theoretically appealing to kids who want a “varsity” sport on their resume. It’s all branding. |
This makes so much more sense. Thank you! |
It still demonstrates the school is focused on improving athletics first and foremost - rather than academics. The athletic recruiting will undoubtedly impact the culture of the school. |
No, it doesn't. Improving one thing (athletics) does not mean they are not ALSO improving another thing (academics), or even many things (arts, robotics, etc.). More than one thing can be true at the same time. |
+1 |
| Does it not mean they are targeting more slots toward football players? |
Thats a really cool idea, and completely different than the rumors posted here. |
My experience was otherwise. Scholarship athlete at Duke. 3.9 GPA. Editor of T10 law review. My teammates became physicians, top law school grads, top MBA grads, and academic leaders (e.g., the department chair in biology at a T25 school). I was nowhere near the best student on my team or in the athletic department. In general we were much better at managing our time than our peers. |
How many of these peers were football players? |

lil history lesson for y'all.
IMG bought the Nick Bollettieri tennis academy and later expanded it into other sports. Nick started his academy by bringing the best junior players in the US and the world together to train. For most of them, it was free. All of the levels below the top players paid full price. Those lower players were about 80% of the Nick Bollettieri academy. What they paid covered the expenses for Agassi, Seles, etc. The higher your ranking, the less you pay. There were sponsors, too, like Nike. Today, UA and Gatorade are the main sponsors of IMG, along with more than a dozen others. If anyone thinks that the national team players at IMG, remember they have a few teams, are paying full freight, which is 100k, then I have a bridge to Military Road to sell to you. |
Nice dog whistle. |
| Anymore news on this rumor? Looks like on IG there a lot of inbound transfers this year. |

Read like three posts up.
My understanding is they created a 2nd Varsity team because the new coach came over from GC and a bunch of players transferred as a result. Supposedly, the 2nd Varsity is like a JV+ team that may play against Varsity teams from the lower level WCAC (O'Connell, Ireton, PVI, etc.) and JV against Dematha, Gonzaga, GC. The 1st Varsity team will play the same schedule it always plays. Against the A Division WCAC teams as well as national teams. |
