Here’s the thing - this isn’t most of the US. Even where I live in the DMV most of my street is blue collar, or in medical, law enforcement, etc. jobs. They’ve been in-person the entire time and spare absolutely zero tears for feds complaining about having to do what they’ve been doing all along.

And yes you can say, “but I’m more productive at home!” Or “my job doesn’t require me to be in the office” but people outside of your bubble don’t care. And they spoke with their vote.

Now they may change their mind when their commutes are miserable with that many more cars on the road, sometimes the dog chases the car and then doesn’t know what to do with it. But next time let’s ensure the Dems have a viable candidate.

Definitely not, but everyone on my street - nurses, professors, attorneys, business executives, etc. have been back in the office a minimum of 3 days/week for years, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed that my Fed neighbors walk their dogs, pick up and drop off their kids, cut their lawn, etc., regularly, during the work day. Additionally, many of them “work” remotely from vacation destinations for multiple weeks of the year. I know of no other large group of workers - blue collar or professional that are able to abuse the system in that way.

Yeah, if Biden had ordered us back five days per week then Trump wouldn’t have been able to do anything. Good thinking PP.


No-had he held agency heads more accountable with enforcing RTO, he wouldn’t have invited the scrutiny that then unfolded in Congress when his cabinet members would testify and could not articulate percentages of staff back in the office and we were slow walking RTO. Returning agencies to 2019 levels maybe would have staved off the scrutiny that then resulted in ridiculous reports like the House oversight report about 6% in person. He let this unravel to the point where Congress got fed up with the non-answers, got into trump’s ear and now this.


The purpose of this memo is to reduce the workforce, not a RTO. If Feds were at the office at 2019 levels, Republicans would latch onto something else to punish Feds. This is not Biden’s fault.


I think it's fair to say that he emboldened the Unions, who were pushing for permanent, 1 day in per week at some agencies. He's the only president we ever had who literally went and matched with picketing union members. He picked winners and losers based on union support (for example, he excluded Tesla from the EV EO on the grounds that it had no union). It makes complete sense to me why they felt they had more power. Even now, Feds are asking with a serious face whether the unions can "trump Trump."

It’ll be interesting to see how the region handles the feds back 100%. Our agency had 3 days a week telework since at least 2015 (probably longer). Can we open Beach drive now, folks?

The whining is truly astounding. Feds getting paid $150,000 per year to be chief diversity officers while sitting at home in their jammies baking bread. Meanwhile, the nursing staff during COVID had to work in person during 10 hour shifts. The CNAs making $38,000 per year who have to wipe the arses of you senior parents in the long-term care facility have to go to work every day. Or the teachers making $52,000 per year going into work every day while barely being able to afford rent so they can reach your kids. As if nurses, teachers, and CNAs don't have kids to deal with, chores at home, and commutes to deal with.

I am one of those professions you mentioned who has been at work in person nearly every day of my career.

I don’t want federal workers to have a blanket in office policy. I’m not 5, I am not screaming, “it’s not fair.” I want the government to use its resources wisely.

why are you still asking this question? Biden had no clue what was going on and his support staff were running amok and doing whatever they wanted. Telework could be efficient and also very wasteful so it should be on the discretion of manager to implement it.

I didn’t mean to imply it was *the* motivating factor, or even high on the list. But if there had been a solid Dem candidate, we wouldn’t be here right now.

Or if Biden hadn’t done the “return to the office, pretty please, but oh yeah I don’t really mean it” and we went to pre-Covid work arrangements, we probably wouldn’t either and Ernst and co. couldn’t be screaming that only 6% of Feds work in-person. Incorrect or not.


This is simply untrue, especially because many of us ARE at pre covid telework levels, including me.

I understand the emotional need to have a "reason" for someone hurting you. But the story you tell yourself is not a good reflection of what is happening or would happen in slightly different circumstances.

My husband and I are both feds who have coworkers across the country and again, you have to understand that some of the people we work with are in high demand positions who only took the job because of the remote policy and work/life balance. They'll be snapped up by another company in minutes.

Replacing them will be impossible. Engineers don't grow on trees. But you should be concerned if engineers working on critical defense infrastructure quit and can't be replaced.

The US.is going to be significantly weaker. MAGA types who hate feds generally claim to be pro mitary, but this significantly weakens the military.
