Public colleges also have selective admissions and charge tuition. That doesn't make them private.

You are confusing public universities and public elementary/middle/high schools.

Public universities are public because they are overseen by state governments and primarily funded by public funds. That is why the offer lower tuition than private universities, usually for in-state students.

Oh really?

The question of why people choose REAL private schools like Potomac, Madeira, and Episcopal has been asked and answered countless times in this forum. If you’re genuinely interested, you should conduct a keyword search.

BIM isn’t a real private school. It’s a public charter school that charges tuition. BIM Parents: If you really want to live in VA, why didn’t you choose TJ or any of the assorted comprehensive public schools in NoVa?

You sound dumb. Hopefully, you aren't a Sidwell parent.

Public schools: open to all in the school boundary
Charter schools in DC: open to all in school lottery
Private schools: Selective admissions and charge tuition.

BIM has selective admissions and charges tuition.

BIM's only selection criteria are can the parents pay, and can the kid last long enough on the test-grind hamster wheel to bring in a few tuition checks?

If I have that wrong, how long was the waiting list last spring?

I'll wait.

What "site, paper, or magazine" ranks DC area schools?

Niche is the go to ranking for all the private and public schools in the DC area these days. Parents may take it a bit too seriously however. I don’t think the schools themselves pay the ranking much heed. The publics like to brag on social media, but not the privates. Certainly not schools of STA, Sidwell, NCS caliber. BIM is a bit different.

The Nova suburbs don’t have charter schools

Yes, they do. It’s called BIM—the public charter school that charges tuition.

Do you need to research the difference between public HIGH schools and public COLLEGES?

See the link above. Certain very highly regarded public school districts in NY are charging tuition now.

Those are public schools that are charging tuition to students outside the district to attend high-demand schools. Do you realize that is not a new phenomenon? Duke Ellington in DC, and BCC in MoCo charge nominal tuition for a handful of students who live outside the attendance zone. Like BIM, neither of those schools are that great. Unlike BIM, DE and BCC are NOT pretending to be private schools.

Westchester NY schools are not great? B-CC, whether you want to believe US News or not, is the #10 school in MD.

In any event, PP/BIM booster claimed that charging tuition is part of what makes a school private.

I know of Arlington and Montgomery County students who have attended Ellington in recent years. You just pay tuition to DCPS. School districts have been doing that for decades. This region does not have individual public schools of the same caliber as Scarsdale or Bronxville. It’s due to the fact that the school districts here are run by the counties and not towns. MCPS is huge. Same with PGCPS, etc.

I was curious about BIM, so I decided to dig a little deeper. I found out that they had one Regeneron/Intel scholar in 2024. This is a big deal right there. I don't remember the last a big 3 or big 5 private school had produced a Regeneron/Intel scholar.
I mean between that, their NMSFS ratio and college placements, I can see why Sidwell & Co feel threaten by BIM. They are disturbing the status quo and the pecking order of things.

It's a completely different model. A parent who would choose Sidwell wouldn't consider BIM.

Not true. Lots of kids get accepted to GDS, Sidwell, the Cathedral’s, Potomac, etc., but choose BIM instead.
