Zuraya will win but we all know she'll be as useless as CDT and Priddy. Such a shame that ACDC runs this show otherwise Paul could have run as a Dem.

I don’t love ACDC either but they didn’t stop Paul from seeking their endorsement. That was all him.

The problem is your adamant need for the ACDC endorsement to support a candidate. Emblematic of the problem in the politics of our country as a whole.

PP here. My adamant need? lol, you know nothing about me. I just don't like misrepresentation.

DP. He never said he was endorsed by the Dems. He said he is a Dem. Going through the machine doesn't make you a Dem. Just ask Miranda.

hahaha, that's true. I hate that fake Dem Miranda is on the Board and was endorsed. I just think it's misleading that Paul is calling himself a Democrat, even though he didn't win, and didn't even run in the primary thing, whatever you call it. I don't remember anyone ever doing this ever.

What should a person who is a registered Democrat, supports the Democratic platform, and votes for Democrats call himself?

So you have just outed yourself as not even being from Virginia. If you were, you would know that you don't register by party in Virginia.

I was skeptical of Miranda's party affiliation. Why can't I be skeptical of Paul's as well? He didn't even try for the primary. I would love a better way for Dems to prove they are real Dems.

Why are you so obsessed with party affiliation for local, non-partisan positions? And who or what do you think gets to determine/“prove” someone’s political affiliation? Kind of nuts….

Why are you so dismissive of it? With MAGAs crazies out there, it's more important than ever to me.

NP

uh, yeah. Like there are TONS of MAGA voters in Arlington LOL. What a stupid statement, PP.

Oh they are here, especially in NA. Big overlap between MAGA and APE which is very very active in APS. Are you trying to keep this quiet PP?

Please describe their impact on APS and how specifically you have verified that their overlap with “MAGA” has effectively changed APS and caused harm to students. What policies have they put in place ?

Miranda can’t do much because there is only one of APE officially on the board. But add a second or third and there goes our schools!

They tone down their Project 2025 ambitions for now, but it will all come out as more of them get into positions of true power. It blows my mind that Arlington is letting them get away with it. It’s like all of you forgot what happened in 2020-21. I guarantee you APE has not, and they want to ruin public education from the inside. It has already happened in liberal places like San Francisco and NYC. Wake up people before it’s too late.

I’m sure I’ll get some hate and gaslighting from the APE’s on this board. It’s almost comical how predictable they are.

You speak exactly like a MAGA.

Huh? the APEs are more confused than usual. The APEs are the MAGAs.

I didn't accuse the PP of BEING a MAGA, just using the same hyperbolic type language of one. This is the problem in our society - people don't see that they do the same thing and deny it because it isn't the exact same words or coming from the same perspective.

Add a republican and our schools WILL BE GONE!
Elect the democrats and OUR COUNTRY WILL BE GONE, ELECTIONS WILL BE GONE!

This is the double talk that APEs are known for. Nice try 👏👏

No they’re right. Basically any discussion of APS eventually gets ruined when someone calls APE, most likely by someone who hasn’t paid attention to anything they’ve done since 2021.

You mean like write RWNJ crap in their newsletter and quietly support Youngkin? Even when he was cutting APS budget, etc?

I mean people just need to pay attention. All the APEs commented on the new accountability standards to the VBOE using the same email template despite opposition from public school advocacy groups that actually care about kids other than their own. APS even opposed it. I recognized so many names.

DP. I went to the VBOE website and saw the comments that Arlington parents made. Wow.

Here you go:

https://townhall.virginia.gov/L/Comments.cfm?StageID=10441

I don't know how much proof anyone needs at this point to see that APE is actively talking out of both sides of their mouth pretending to care about APS but instead causes chaos that will be far reaching. The new accountability standards is a thin veiled ploy for RW extremists to take control of our "failing" schools and turn them charter/private. And who does that benefit? Not those who are being taught in those schools.

There are still common interests that can be addressed through their advocacy. You don't have to agree with everything. See Liz Cheney and others - don't agree with the Dems on just about anything, but partnering up with them for their common cause of democracy and preventing an autocracy.

I don't see the point in all this discussion. There is no threat of a R takeover in the SB election.

They have already infiltrated several committees/workgroups. And are quietly pushing RW agenda.

They have to lie to accomplish their goals here in blue Arlington, but they are determined and have already succeeded once: Miranda.

The point is we don't want any more lying Rs on the SB.

Did any other candidates leave a job they loved in order to run? No. I'm not implying that should be a factor in who you vote for, but it's incredible someone would try to spin a real professional sacrifice as a demonstration that he lacks the commitment to service. It's completely the opposite.

I truly hope it works out in his favor!

Anonymous wrote:But Miranda misrepresented herself as a Democrat. That is not hyperbole. She bragged to everyone she ran into that she voted for Youngkin. I heard it from her mouth. If she’s not fake, then everything’s up for grabs.

I’m not sure if Zuraya cares about APS either.

But Paul and Kathleen, one by work, the other by her activism do care about APS.

Zuraya’s only educational qualification is the big D behind her name, and the fat election fund which comes with it.

She’s here for the political benefits, not the schools.

Weiss worked in this school system for over two decades, and seems to have firsthand experience of our many obvious (and solvable!) problems. Tapia-Hadley is thoughtful and professional and Hispanic voices on the Board are valuable given the makeup of the community. I generally want new perspectives on the Board, but Rives' stance on gender is a dealbreaker.

Did the prior post about antisemitic posts from Tapia-Hadley have any basis in reality? Without any evidence, it seems like anonymous slander.

Why wouldn’t you vote for Kathleen? She’s the most qualified person running IMO.

+1

This is a strange pairing.

Not sure how involved Paul will be going forward. His kids are grown and he teaches in DC now. And he didn't start to speak up until last year, and then what did he do other than make some comments to the school board and some posts on AEM?

And what did Zuraya ever do? Nothing! She's polished and well spoken but really new to school issues.

Kathleen is the only legit candidate.

Paul is the only candidate who has worked for APS, none of the others cannbe more acquainted with the issues facing APS than someone who has worked for them, and seen the changes. Paul was an active member in the APS education group and was even part of trying to start a separate teachers union, when AEA hit the skids. I don’t know him personally but will be voting for him.

Was, was, was. All in the past. He works for DCPS now. Where's his investment in APS? He hasn't been around that much this year. Probably busy with DC.

Do you think he wouldn’t commit himself to job if he gets elected? What are you basing that on?

Sure I think it's a relevant question - why elect someone who works in DCPS and who has no kids in APS? How invested can he be? Haven't you noticed he's not very vocal or active this year now that he's no longer in APS? Also, a lot of Board members spend significant time in the schools during the week. How is he going to do that?

So is it your position that only people with children currently in APS are qualified to serve on the SB?

There is no one in the race who knows APS as well as Paul Weiss does.

No but they should have some current connection, so they are invested in APS. Paul already is doing far less than last year, far less visible and involved now that he's not working in APS anymore, and his kids are gone too. How do you know he still cares about APS? What evidence do you have of his CURRENT involvement?

I really wonder if you are connected to one of the other candidates in some way. Tapia-Hadley has no education background, has served on one committee and was a member of PTA. I’m not voting for that. She’s the uninvolved one.

Lol, no, I'm not part of any of the campaigns. While I am a Dem, I am not involved in Arl Dems either. I do really like one of the candidates, Kathleen Clark, and have problems with each of the other three for various reasons.

+1. It's scary.

Clark swept that election. Pretty big margin over #2 Tapia-Hadley. Wonder how T-H feels about that?

Weiss a distant third, but bested Rives who’s in dead last. Embarrassing for Rives.

I doubt it’s embarrassing for him… he was the only non-Democrat. Of course he never had a chance.

What do people make of Clark beating Tapia-Hadley? I think it was the opposite back in the Dem primary.

If things were reversed and you found yourself as a Democrat in a majority Republican community with rubber-stamped Republican candidates always victorious, why would you run? To get your voice heard, your different point of view heard. Or, you could not run and do nothing to change the status quo that you loathe.

Paul wasn't running as a Dem either and even he beat Rives, and he did it as a first time candidate without a whole lot of effort.

If he runs again, he's going to become Audrey Clement.

Yes- he was running as a democrat. He even put that on his signs. He just didn’t have the all mighty ACDC endorsement.

that doesn't mean anything. he wasn't endorsed by the dems, wasn't on their sample ballots

That enough people in the know appreciated that Kathleen actually has real credentials and experience and gave their other vote most likely to Paul or only cast one vote. Zuraya still had her name on the D sample ballot so of course she was going to win, but people paying attention knew she was actually the least qualified candidate among the four.
