What Are the Tell Tale Signs of 'New Money' People?

The entire United States is new money. It’s by definition. This country was buffaloes and Indians before the White man came. It’s all new money and anybody that appears wealthy is just 1 or 2 generations from wrangling cattle and planting corn

money is money but here is what i have observed. Old money is conservative, understated - not much showing off. New money is all about announcing to the word "ive made it", just look at me and everything I own!

I would much rather be new money and have earned it than old money.

Who really cares? There is almost no old money in the US. Look at all the wealth that has been created in the last thirty years. Even in traditional places like boarding schools and county clubs, first and second generation wealth dominates. A few generations of inheritance tax, divorce and kids and there isn’t much left.

Depends on your definition of “money”.

New money > no money

We are no money, and I would much rather be looked down upon by old money than for being the middle of the middle class.

We are new money. Our parents came to America with nothing. We don’t try to flaunt anything. We live comfortably. I’m not sure what this obsession with new money is. We are hard working. Our kids are happy and thriving.

I know a few people who come from money but unimpressive themselves. They didn’t do well academically or professionally. I would rather be self made new money than old money who looks down at competent new money.

It’s all relative. I think if it’s more than 1-2 generations, it’s “old money.” To me, the Rockefellers are old money. Same with the Carnegies, Astors, and Gettys. I would never call this new money.

In any case nails should be filed oval/almond depending how they grow and fairly short. Buffed is excellent. Quite practical, too.

Makeup. Nouveau trophy women have elaborate contouring, several shades of blush/highlighter/shadow. DRAMATIC lipstick and eyes.

Controversial comparison but look at Lauren Sanchez and Princess of Wales pre-2023. Hard to think of equivalent US old money dressed up.

She's definitely not old money. Her mother was a flight attendant, her father a dispatcher. They made money running a party business.

The Royal family is also considered decidedly middle class (British sense) in comparison to the aristocracy who are the real old money in the UK.

Care to share your reasoning with the group?

This is accurate. Old money gets diluted pretty quickly. There are a lot of people with their grandparents' fancy antiques but tiny bank accounts. No way for old money to grow as quickly as new.

I am going to be New Money when my father dies and I inherit 2-3M. It feels weird to think about improving my lifestyle as a result of that.

My family’s money came from a deal with John Rockefeller, so we’re now into the 4th generation.
