What Are the Tell Tale Signs of 'New Money' People?

Anonymous
Nails. Nouveau Riche have exotic shapes, polishes, weird "French" manicures with colors that are not shades of white/cream and pink/beige (depending onnrace). In any case nails should be filed oval/almond depending how they grow and fairly short. Buffed is excellent. Quite practical, too.

Makeup. Nouveau trophy women have elaborate contouring, several shades of blush/highlighter/shadow. DRAMATIC lipstick and eyes.

Controversial comparison but look at Lauren Sanchez and Princess of Wales pre-2023. Hard to think of equivalent US old money dressed up.

It all depends on the individual and how secure they are in their own choices.

This is not a topic ever brought up by individuals from old line families. Unless it’s behind closed doors with your financial advisor or the most trusted people in your family. It’s considered extremely gauche.

Dressing flashy. Wearing lots of expensive or expensive looking jewelry. Old line families dress very plainly and conservatively. They’re clothes and shoes and jewelry might be very expensive, but you never know - they invest in specific pieces to last.

Old line people listen more than they talk.
New money people talk more than they listen.
They want other people to know about their money and run their mouth constantly about it. Old line people don’t want anyone to know about their wealth, and they purposely don’t want it known.

That is because old money did not earn their inherited money and they know that. Also know they probably could have not made it on their own starting from scratch. So they need to stay quiet or someone will call them out.

They also got it from exploiting workers like railroads, cotton, sugar, etc.

If they have money and you have met them or even seen them ... new money. You won't see the old money folks. Or if you do, you won't recognize them. Hiding in plain sight. And not even conscious of it.

This is pretty accurate.

Yes. A pretty accurate guess by DCUM folks who think they know. Lol.

Why do y'all even discuss things like this? And you post about it all the time. You UMC strivers are so obsessive and you have such ... I don't know ... loud thoughts about others. It's strange and unhealthy.

My cousin married into some serious new money. At the baby shower her MIL led my aunt and mother into the bedroom to show off her jewelry collection, hand woven rugs, silk clothing and listed the price of every item. My mom was suitably impressed and envious.

Lol. No. Most old money people have "made it on their own" in addition to inheriting. And even those who haven't would never worry that "someone will call them out." It's a nonissue. The posts in this forum are hilarious.

OMG. This is horrifying. I want to say I don't believe it but ... I've seen Real Housewives, so I do.

There was one thread that was describing how confident and polished and how well spoken they are and how well they treat the staff and how they do it all so unassumingly. It makes them sound like gods who walk the earth. Hard to believe the entire group of people who come from old money contains no a$sholes whatsoever!
