I don’t blame covid for this barbaric behavior. I blame kids being raised in a subcultural norm where it’s okay (in fact, expected) to react violently when you perceive (imagine?) you have been disrespected.

Ten bucks says the kids who committed the assault will allege the victim made a racist comment…as if that justifies kicking a girl in the head while she’s on laying on the ground.

Ding ding ding we have a winner.

I’ve said this here a million times before. The only way to solve the problem is to change this culture. But how does one do that when it’s considered racist to even mention it?

You start with the parents.

Their questions were about what happens if they get caught fighting or if a lot of fights happen?

Go to the source. Look at any blockbuster movie it’s filled with fighting. You become what you consume. Normalizing gun culture. And the people involved as heroes… What are you expect! This is a huge influence. Now combine it with TikTok, impulsivity control, and bad parenting situations.

This is a joint message from the principals of Walter Johnson High School and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High Schools.

Last night, Friday, September 1, B-CC hosted Walter Johnson for our first football game of the fall season. The game went well and was an exciting match. Our fans and attendees were great and everyone seemed to have a fun evening. The safety plans jointly made by both schools worked well on campus and all of the fans left school grounds safely.

Unfortunately, after the game there was a large gathering at the Bethesda Metro Station by many B-CC and Walter Johnson students. This gathering turned into fighting, which then resulted in some serious student injuries. This is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

There is also a mention on social media that a student may have been in possession of a weapon; this has not been confirmed and remains a part of the investigation.

The Montgomery County Police Department was engaged immediately and responded. They are currently investigating this incident as are the school administrators. These behaviors by students are dangerous, illegal and completely inappropriate. As individual students from both schools are identified appropriate disciplinary action, in alignment with the MCPS Student Code of Conduct, will be assigned

We will be sending more information out to our communities as the administrations from both schools work collaboratively with MCPS security, MCPS athletics and the Montgomery County police to complete the investigation and to help repair the harm that has been done. Together we must help our students understand how such disruptive actions impact our community.

We appreciate the support from our parents and guardians in helping us emphasize to students that their safety is always our priority, and that they play a critical role keeping our school events safe and fun for everyone.

Sincerely,
Shelton Mooney
Principal, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School
Jennifer Baker
Principal, Walter Johnson High School

Maybe I’m jaded, but to me this read as though the school will handle through their disciplinary process. I hope the students press charges with the police.

I can assure you that the parents of the victims intend to pursue getting the perpetrators charged.

Juveniles rarely see any consequences. There's been a movement to end the supposed "school to prison" pipeline after all. Remember we've even removed police from all MCPS schools because they found that people fitting certain dempgraphics were getting arrested as a result.

The cops are supposed to be sitting at the Summer Concert Series, which happens every Friday -- that is where the crowds are and where you most need police presence.

You can thank Will Jawando for leasing the movement to get School Resource Officers out of school. Now he’s running for Senate: hell to the no. I went to a fundraiser for Jawando early on but I don’t like what I’ve seen.

Great. My kids go to BCC and I hope they kick the kids far out.

. At least one kid is in the hospital. There should be jail time for this.

Agree but it's very unlikely. All the laws and policies have been changed re: juveniles. A lot of specialized schools/centers for violent teens have been closed.

If the kid in the hospital dies and assailant is 18, maybe CJS consequences. Otherwise, likely RJ.

What does RJ look like in MoCo schools? Per WP:

Thank you for sharing this recent article. So kids were disciplined with one month suspensions or removal from extracurriculars for a month? Is that the harshest sentence they have? Should not apply in this case. Kids need police charges, mandatory counseling and special schooling.

This was off campus so it's not a school issue. This is lack of supervision on the parents part. MCPS should require an adult to supervise these teens at the football games given they cannot behave. Parents and kids involved should be held accountable by the police. MCPS is to blame for a lot of things but not this one. It happened after the game not on their property.

This isn't an MCPS issue. It didn't happen on school grounds. Those kids should be charged as adults and in jail. Not mandatory counseling and special schooling, jail.

The video shows a pretty big crowd - 20 people at least including a number of girls who are throwing punches and stomping someone. Some of the assailants can be clearly identified. The police and school authorities should have lots of evidence. It sounds like the schools did a lot to try to prevent this from happening; maybe they just need to ban student attendance at games altogether? It's outrageous.

Btw there was a BCC student last year who beat another student with a chair. It made the news and provoked a thread here at the time. One of my DCs graduated from BCC in May and I was shocked to hear the kid's name called for graduation - and he got huge cheers from the crowd. Despite the fact that he'd been violent repeatedly during his time at BCC. I have another kid still at BCC and I think it's a fantastic school in many ways. But there's something really wrong, obviously.

This is exactly the problem. Imagine being allowed to beat another student with a chair and graduate from that school.

There are no consequences for vile criminal behavior and that is directly the result of the school board.
People need to wake up.
If you care about nothing else you should at least care that bad schools drive property values down.

The in school incident is an mcps issue but this was not on mcps property and at the metro. This is a police issue and a parenting issue. Child should be arrested and charged as an adult. Mcps needs more security but mcps is not to blame for this if it is not on property.

Property values es are the least of my concern. Safety is. Maybe these things are happening as the parents are not focused on their kids and their behavior.

Get this through your head:
It ceases to become a parenting issue when it effects my children. Now it's a societal issue and I expect the system including both the schools and the police to protect my children.

I could give a flying fig less about thugs mom and dad issues.

You need to protect your own kids as if you are expecting others to it’s not going to happen. This did not happen at school and police cannot be everywhere.

Curious on whether you live in the area? This was a completely predictable event that happened directly as a result of a school event in a completely predictable location. And you are totally wrong, it is absolutely the job of the school and police to protect the public. Unclear how you could think otherwise.

Excuse me, np here - live in the area. You are saying this was completely predictable? Really? This level of depravity - kicking kids on the ground in the head? Is that really what you meant by a “completely predictable event?”

I’m surprised I seems like there’s only been one post from a parent of a kid who was there. Is there no chatter yet about who the attackers were?

Anonymous wrote:I can confirm the boys on the ground are both WJ students. The girls getting jumped were both BCC (mistaken as WJ). The joint statement from the principals of these schools is complete bull$hit. This was not a gathering that turned violent. This was a mob of BCC kids hunting down WJ kids while wearing ski masks. I can also confirm that there was indeed a weapon present. All have been treated for bruises and cuts. There was a separate incident where a WJ student was attacked and ended up in the hospital after being attacked with a weapon. He sustained head injuries and a broken nose. Please stop calling this a fight or brawl. These kids were attacked. I hope those who perpetrated this are prosecuted.

Help the parents of the injured to hire lawyers and press charges. I would definitely contribute to a go fund me for this. We cannot tolerate these actions.

On DCUM, everything is a parenting issue - specifically, other people's bad parenting.
