From that link:

"A nationally known crash expert also testified, supporting the prosecution. He said the BMW's sophisticated data recorder showed Shahid accelerated from 60 to 81 mph and never applied the brakes."

Elsewhere I saw one of the passengers of the BMW said that he thought the driver accelerated before the collision. Was he trying to go around the SUV and missed? Was he trying to brake and hit the wrong pedal? Was he trying to beat the light? This seems the most likely.

Did he accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake?

There's no indication of that, and the fact that Shahid never told the police that means it would be really hard for him to mount that defense now.

Do we know everything he said to police?

Hard to say, but it all could have been introduced into evidence, so presumably the most relevant parts were.

Olgucan Atakoglu killed three members of the same family by driving 100+ mph down River Road in 2016. He pled guilty and was sentenced to 12 years.

Usman deserves to get well over 10 years. I hope it’s closer to 20.

He had a long record of speeding which contributed to his sentence.

“In 2012, Atakoglu was cited and convicted for failure to reduce speed and driving a motor vehicle in a negligent manner. In April 2013, he was cited and convicted for exceeding the maximum speed limit by 30 miles per hour or greater, failure to drive in a designated lane and driving in a negligent manner. In October 2013, he was citied and convicted of skidding and spinning wheels. In November 2013, he was cited and convicted for exceeding the maximum speed limit by 15 miles per hour or greater. Authorities also suspended his license for a period of time.”

I hope Usman gets a loooooooooooooong sentence. Minimum 10 years, but 15 would be better, since he took 2 lives and critically injured another. Unfortunately we don’t adequately punish criminals.

I looked up that case. The reports say that under MD law he would have been eligible for parole after serving just a quarter of his sentence, which is insane.

They should have saved samples from his social media. I rember seeing some of his posts (from well before the crash) that were then deleted. Typical self centered entitled turd with big ego. IF he hadn't been going 25mph over the limit and then accelerated to 46 mph OVER the limit none of this would have happened. Remember the evidence shows he was going 60 to begin with then accelerated to 81! On that road when he knew fellow students were all over the sidewalks is beyond reckless. It is criminal. If he had even tried to brake maybe the girls would be alive. People died and families have been ruined and this clown has been out living his life for two years.

Maryland's laws are lenient for crimes.

I remember that horrible incident. I’m glad the driver is serving time.

I’m certain “they” did - I remember checking his Facebook, online OHS yearbook and maybe Instagram immediately after his name was released. Went back to check sometime relatively soon thereafter and all profiles were scrubbed.

Aren’t self-entitled posts what many 16-18 post? I think the difference is that most of them don’t drive BMWs at 60 mph.

I agree with this. Teenagers say lots of things and are supposed to learn and mature and grow. I don't see any reason to hold on to what should have been ephemeral conversations.

What matters is that this teen did something that was not only reckless but also harmed other people permanently.

His social media posts generally aren’t relevant, especially ones merely indicating that he is “self-centered.” (How many teens aren’t self-centered?) I assume he has kept a low profile post-crash to avoid posting anything that could harm him at sentencing.

Tell that to the people doing hard time in The Cut.

Maryland's laws are lenient for crimes.

This is oddly personal. Many people are messy and manipulative, but very rarely do they kill others by speeding. If he had a pattern of reckless behavior, I am sure the prosecution has looked into it.

You don’t know what happened. He may been trying to brake but hit the gas instead.
