Here are Whitman and Churchill.

Funny that the Whitman one has so very many kids going to UMD/CP and so many kids happy to post they will be attending schools that are lower down on the USNWR list. OP’s kid would be in the largest group of sweatshirt wearers.

Exactly. But OPs kid seems to think she is better than them.

I have a kid a a W school. Honestly, the kids are very supportive of each other...it's the parents that are crazy! you just can't drink the kool aid!

My senior is at Walter Johnson, and honestly, whenever someone says people are racist/entitled/rude/etc at W schools, I just have to laugh. WJ has 3000 students. Sure, some parents may be ambitious and snobby. But the immense majority parent the kids they have, and understand that college is what you make of it.

It's really bizarre how some people, who think of themselves as caring, tolerant people, just casually flick off comments on W schools - it's an example of "othering", and in your own community to boot.

oh I suppose the "all non W schools are ganglandia" comment doesn't scream elitism and "othering".

PP you replied to. Except *I* don't make that sort of comment. And the majority of people don't make these comments. People shouldn't react to the worst on the internet by lobing their own firebombs. It's exactly what happens in politics between the right and the left: the majority of people on both sides have no problem with the other side. It's a vocal minority who hurls insults at the other vocal minority, and it contributes to the division in our society.

So don't reply in kind.

Also, words matter, a lot. There is value to using them accurately and with precision. "Einstein is not as strong academically as Winston Churchill" is an accurate statement. "Einstein? Oh my god! It's an awful school full of gangs!" is rude and untrue. Similarly, "Swastikas have been drawn in multiple Bethesda schools over the years" is factual, whereas "Bethesda has a problem with antisemitism" is entirely untrue (more than half my street is Jewish and we don't feel particularly targeted in any way).

That's Whitman for ya. Some of those kids and parents make horrible comments about people from "lesser" schools.

You see people on here making comments like all non W schools are bad, basically ganglandia. Snooty parents breed snooty kids. Whitman parents must be so proud of their snooty kids.

There is 0.0 chance any kid from Whitman mocked a UMD sweatshirt or admission. People are gullible here and adore their stereotypes.

I'm sure some people thought there was 0.0 chance that some nice kid at Whitman would make racist comments, but that happens, too. There are some very snobbish people around here.

My non W kid is in the Honors program at UMD. For anyone who wants to mock my kid for attending UMD, you are an idiot. 4 years after HS graduation, my kid will have a degree for about 120k versus the 320k for the Ivy Degree. We can use the difference to put a down payment on a house (when it makes sense).

My kid too. The room and board is all that I am paying for (50-60K?). The rest is free thanks to merit scholarships. Double majors in Math and cs.

I guess nobody should be happy or outwardly proud of themselves.
Anonymous
Most yearbooks have a section on each senior and where they are going , a sweatshirt day is not a big deal. We should be proud of our seniors not embarrassed, sad country we live in where we celebrate failure and are embarrassed of success

It is funny what some of you here choose to get offended about ... EVERYTHING!

Sounds like the every one gets a trophy crowd.

If the school wants to have a sweatshirt day, they can. If you don't want to participate, don't.

Do you think kids at school don't already know where a lot of these classmates are going to attend?

If you or your kid feel inferior for your school choice, that's a YOU problem.

What I’ve literally never heard of it and I’m from super fancy upper crusty-ness. It’s totally gauche to brag about where you are going to go school. Sweatshirts are for weekend chores after you’ve graduated.

And screw anyone who talks down yo MC students. As a college professor, I promise you the students who transfer
from CCs are the hardest working and most insightful. And they know the value of their education.

+1. And really weird to post a pic of a bed, if the goal is to look elite and snotty.

Anonymous wrote:Your kid is getting snarky comments for going to UMD??

Well, I guess that is your fault for living in the snobby Whitman district.

My kids go to Einstein and kids that are ecstatic if they go to UMD. It's the top choice since it is the affordable in state flagship.

I agree the sweatshirt tradition is obnoxious.

No one is making snarky comments at Whitman or any other local school about attending UMD. It’s a great school and harder to get into every year.

You have no clue about the snarky comments.

The snobbishness of Whitman is way overstated on this board. Most families of teenagers in the neighborhood bought their homes in the late 90s or early 2000s when prices were a lot more reasonable. Parents tend to be duel income working professionals and thus fall in the donut hole. On average they have two kids. Private university tuition and board is roughly $80,000 a year and will only rise. So if there is a younger sibling that's roughly $700,000 in costs. No financial aid. Never mind grad or medical school. That's a lot of money even for the majority of Whitman families. And Maryland is a good school, particularly in CS and engineering. And if a kid intends to go to law or medical school it makes even more sense. No one at Whitman except the super-snoots looks down on anyone going to Maryland. In my experience, they tend to be good, thoughtful kids who understand that choices sometimes need to be made.

I was here in the early 2000s, and prices in the Whitman boundary in Bethesda were not reasonable then.

But a lot more reasonable than now. We bought our house for $500K in 2000- was the most expensive sale in the neighborhood at that time. It's now worth $1.2M. My husband and I are government employees with 3 kids to put through college so UMD it is for our oldest! Agree that UMD has a great reputation and my kid did not feel that anyone looked down on her for going there (she's a Whitman grad).

I'll be sure to pin this so that the next time someone mentions how W schools are the only schools that are good, and that the rest are basically ganglandia, I have this post for future reference.
