My senior is at Walter Johnson, and honestly, whenever someone says people are racist/entitled/rude/etc at W schools, I just have to laugh. WJ has 3000 students. Sure, some parents may be ambitious and snobby. But the immense majority parent the kids they have, and understand that college is what you make of it.

It's really bizarre how some people, who think of themselves as caring, tolerant people, just casually flick off comments on W schools - it's an example of "othering", and in your own community to boot.

oh I suppose the "all non W schools are ganglandia" comment doesn't scream elitism and "othering".

PP you replied to. Except *I* don't make that sort of comment. And the majority of people don't make these comments. People shouldn't react to the worst on the internet by lobing their own firebombs. It's exactly what happens in politics between the right and the left: the majority of people on both sides have no problem with the other side. It's a vocal minority who hurls insults at the other vocal minority, and it contributes to the division in our society.

So don't reply in kind.

Also, words matter, a lot. There is value to using them accurately and with precision. "Einstein is not as strong academically as Winston Churchill" is an accurate statement. "Einstein? Oh my god! It's an awful school full of gangs!" is rude and untrue. Similarly, "Swastikas have been drawn in multiple Bethesda schools over the years" is factual, whereas "Bethesda has a problem with antisemitism" is entirely untrue (more than half my street is Jewish and we don't feel particularly targeted in any way).

um.. ok.. we'll see if those posters listen to you.

But it’s not actually a fact that Churchill is stronger academically. I think Einstein is stronger in engineering.

Sounds like the every one gets a trophy crowd.

If the school wants to have a sweatshirt day, they can. If you don't want to participate, don't.

Do you think kids at school don't already know where a lot of these classmates are going to attend?

If you or your kid feel inferior for your school choice, that's a YOU problem.

Lots of DCUMers like to stir up crap for a variety of reasons.

Dumb place sent out a notification for kids to wear their college sweatshirt to school on May 1st.

What is this? So kids can brag more about the swanky, expensive colleges they got into and make others feel badly who were waitlisted or had to take second choice? Yuck. I know I know - we bought here thinking it was a "good" School.. NO! A school of pushy, rude parents who only look out for number one. Themselves and their kids. It's awful.

What about a kid who may have to go to Montgomery College? What if someone isn't going to college? What if someone comes from low income housing and cannot afford college? What if What if What if?? Not bad in and of itself but geez. My kid is likely going to UMD and has already received a number of snarky comments. On waitlist that won't get off of while kid x, y, z parades in and out with a Michigan sweatshirt daily.

Why does this idiot school allow this? What is wrong with these people? Isn't the instagram they are exposed to daily bad enough???

Stop the madness. It's cruel to some of these kids who are not thrilled with college decision.

Just like all the private and public schools do in most of the country.

Nothing wrong with celebrating your peers and friends. And yourself!

Rich parent complaining that others are paying for expensive privates and they prefer to spend their money on a lifestyle vs college.

Omfg you can not be serious?!?!

Coddling snowflakes is the reason your kid’s work ethic sucks and their entitlement is high.

OP,

My son graduated from that W school 3 years ago. We did not have a college sweatshirt that time (it was the peak COVID). We took a picture of him holding an MC logo and sent it to school.

I even bought an MC bumper stick and it is still on my car.

We just celebrated along with others who made into colleges that are a lot hard to get into

No one thinks WJ is a W school.

My kid wore a free UMD tshirt that they got at admitted students day to school, and yes, they are going to UMD. But, we are at RM, and many RMIB kids go to UMD, especially for STEM.

Yet another reason why I'm glad we did not choose a W school.

Congrats to your kid!

What is choose a W school? All you had to do was buy an expensive or little home? It's a real estate choice.

Listen, as someone who grew up poor and felt a little bad about seeing that kind of stuff, I'd much rather learn to handle my feelings than have a bunch of spoiled rich people worry about my problems. You are soothing your own pain, not the pain of kids who either can't go to college or don't choose to. This is real life, start caring about resilience.

we could've "chosen" to buy in a W cluster. We bought several years ago, and we could afford it, but chose not to because I didn't want my kids around so much wealth. We actually bid on a house in the Churchill cluster, and the seller tried to get more from us, but we declined. They then came back to us and agreed on our original offer, but by then we had decided against this cluster after doing a bit more research.

Wealthy schools have its own problems, just like low income schools have its own problems.

Lots of kids at RMIB go to UMD, and the ones who go to an Ivy don't make any snarky comments about those who go to UMD.

With all the MCPS focus this week on a plan for more inclusiveness, perhaps Principals should pause and consider the impact of certain traditions. Graduation is not always synonymous with going to college. It’s insensitive and stigmatizing to send out an email to all seniors asking them to wear a college shirt that represents where they are going next year. Why not ask students to wear a class of 2023 t-shirt that represents the entire class?

Many factors influence a student’s ability to go to the next level: implicit biases in the college application process, finances, family responsibilities, and academic readiness for college are a few. Principals should re-examine decisions such as these in light of the recent data collected by MCPS. Just because a school has always done something a certain way that has a negative impact for some students, doesn’t mean that those decisions should continue moving forward. All MCPS graduates should be celebrated, not just the ones going to college.

This is not the first year parents have complained about these types of traditions. Many MCPS Principals are tone deaf and want to promote an image of Ivy League bound students while ignoring the stress the peer pressure places on students.

The bolded above is why parents want to send their children to certain high schools. It has nothing to do with wealth, the color of people's skin, or anything else. My children will be going to college, it's not optional, and I don't want them thinking otherwise.
