Dumb "W" school asking kids to wear their newly accepted College Shirts on May 1st

Wow. It’s amazing how little you comprehended in this thread.

Dumb place sent out a notification for kids to wear their college sweatshirt to school on May 1st.

What is this? So kids can brag more about the swanky, expensive colleges they got into and make others feel badly who were waitlisted or had to take second choice? Yuck. I know I know - we bought here thinking it was a "good" School.. NO! A school of pushy, rude parents who only look out for number one. Themselves and their kids. It's awful.

What about a kid who may have to go to Montgomery College? What if someone isn't going to college? What if someone comes from low income housing and cannot afford college? What if What if What if?? Not bad in and of itself but geez. My kid is likely going to UMD and has already received a number of snarky comments. On waitlist that won't get off of while kid x, y, z parades in and out with a Michigan sweatshirt daily.

Why does this idiot school allow this? What is wrong with these people? Isn't the instagram they are exposed to daily bad enough???

Stop the madness. It's cruel to some of these kids who are not thrilled with college decision.

it isn't required.

What do we think about all the Instagram posts about college acceptances. There's a whole slew of instagram accounts for individual mcps high schools.

Here are Whitman and Churchill.

The kids should get used to wearing these shirts all the time anyway. I see more college gear in DC on people of all ages than anywhere else. They better buy college shirts in a variety of colors!

I don't mind schools encouraging students to be proud if it is optional. It sure beats pajama day or 90s day!

I would wear this.

I’m POOR. Happy now?

I am with you OP. The school should not be encouraging this, although perhaps the school may view admissions as their achievement, too.

W school graduate here and I am with you both PP and OP. It's not that students should be embarrassed by their achievements, or shouldn't own their decisions, or shouldn't grow a thick skin. It's just that in the current context, this school-sponsored activity is problematic and in poor taste.

+10. Yes. It’s in poor taste in the current climate.

Kids can opt in or opt out. Just like when they do March madness at my office or St. Patrick’s Day.

I would wear a funny t-shirt.

That's Whitman for ya. Some of those kids and parents make horrible comments about people from "lesser" schools.

You see people on here making comments like all non W schools are bad, basically ganglandia. Snooty parents breed snooty kids. Whitman parents must be so proud of their snooty kids.

There is 0.0 chance any kid from Whitman mocked a UMD sweatshirt or admission. People are gullible here and adore their stereotypes.

I'm sure some people thought there was 0.0 chance that some nice kid at Whitman would make racist comments, but that happens, too. There are some very snobbish people around here.

This sounds like a fun tradition, but if you feel bad about your student's limited options, then don't participate. Nevertheless, it seems like you have a poor or unrealistic attitude. Both of my kids got into more than T10 school but ended up choosing UMDCP with honors+merit because it was a better ROI for what they wanted to study.

My non W kid is in the Honors program at UMD. For anyone who wants to mock my kid for attending UMD, you are an idiot. 4 years after HS graduation, my kid will have a degree for about 120k versus the 320k for the Ivy Degree. We can use the difference to put a down payment on a house (when it makes sense).

Funny that the Whitman one has so very many kids going to UMD/CP and so many kids happy to post they will be attending schools that are lower down on the USNWR list. OP’s kid would be in the largest group of sweatshirt wearers.
