BTW this is the OP. I have only posted once on this thread; unsure where your assumption is coming from. My kid will be attending another school on a scholarship. As with many other people on this thread, I find NEU admissions practices shady. Perhaps I overexaggerated on the title a bit but hope it is helpful for parents of kids just starting this process.

Totally agree. You are posting to help others understand this. IMO, their admission practices just demonstrate how they will treat you once you say "yes". If it's the school for you and this doesn't bother you, then go ahead and say yes, matriculate and enjoy. Otherwise, OP's comments may help someone else's kid from falling in love with a school that is not the right fit for them.

Northeastern is not a small LAC - if you need hand holding you may not be the type to want to go to school in the city, which is fine, just know what kind of school you are applying to.

Even if you want a mid size school in the city, just know they have grown from 12K undergrad to over 20K in a decade, without much infrastructure changes.

But with a tremendous business plan, that is serving both sides (accepted applicants and the school) better than any infrastructure change. So?

On top of that, some may say acquiring several properties, taking them over and completely restructuring them is exactly an infrastructure change. An impressive one, at that. So, you can't discount that.

You seem illogically offended OP, it is time to let it go - for your kid's sake. Don't give your kid the idea that they are not good enough for you, which is what you are doing here.

Also, slow down in tech? You (!!!) would have to tell the applicants not to go into tech, I suppose? Do you really think you can control everything, OP? Or nothing? Which one is it - because this hangup of yours is too much.

LOL Tech is the last field you need to worry about.

If I were to choose CS or Engineering, and I could not get into MIT (so few can, but so few discuss it - funny!) - then I would try for Northeastern.

Certainly in the Boston area, I would choose MIT first then Harvard,
Northeastern 3rd.

NE over BU, over Brandeis, over even BC????
You clearly did not go to school in the Boston-Cambridge area and have not tracked these schools over time.

Who the F would choose Brandeis or BC for CS/Engineering?
WTF???

Who would choose Brandeis over Northeastern for anything.

More people prefer Northeastern over BU these days.

You are a clueless idiot.

Well, US News has BU and BC ranked ahead of NE, and Brandeis tied with NE, so I maybe wouldn’t be so quick to throw around the phrase “clueless idiot.” Dp, btw.

What part of CS/Engineering don't you understand.

BC doesn't even have a decent engineering department. They just started something.
Brandis is pretty behind.

More people prefer Northeastern over the campuless BU these days.

DP, not one to traditionally resort to name calling, but clueless idiot does seem fitting.

Perhaps for the person arguing that no one would go to universities ranked higher or the same as NE. The boosterism and sock puppeting really over the top.

Brandeis doesn't even have an engineering school.

Just checked and it's planning a engineering major under art & science

coming soon https://www.brandeis.edu/arts-sciences/new-initiatives/engineering-major.html

LOL

it's CS program is ranked #110 by USN&WR
Boston college is in the same boat.
These more of liberal arts colleges are now trying to get into Engineering.
Whoever brought in these two schools are clueless idiots.

BU and Tufts are more of peer and competing schools for CS/Engineering
Some may prefer Tufts for more traditional feel and overall slight better prestige, but I would rank Northeastern #3 behind #1 MIT and #2 Harvard for CS/Engineering in the Boston area.
Someone may bring in Olin, but that school is too niche with less than 400 students.

BU and Tufts are absolutely not peer. But I agree with the rest of your post.

Yes, they are all under MIT, then Harvard, then the ranking varies, depending whom you ask.

OPs kid didn't get into Boston and they are angry

NEU made a mistake with sending out their info (happens EVERY year with a different school, mistakes happen, hence erasers on pencils and the "undo" buttons on computers) and OP is angry

Over 97,000 students applied to NEU, so clearly many students and their families are interested and those that got in will likely attend, so even though OP is still angry (and maybe will be forever), it will likely NOT have any effect on NEU's admissions process

OP, you can continue to angry for as long as you like, but why bother? It will help your health, your blood pressure, etc., if you could let it go

Well if you read one page back instead of typing up a rant about nothing, you would know that OPs kid does not even have a decision yet.

Not the OP, don’t have a kid applying to NEU but mistakes like that are unacceptable. They never seem to make a mistake collecting the money for apps. They never forgive a kid who makes a mistake in submitting their app. This is a professional, academic organization and it is not unreasonable to expect them to perform as such.

It does not sound like a mistake - it sounds like OP was accepted to what program they applied to. OP can decline. Your complaint is woefully dramatic and overblown.

Oh it’s actually worse than that. My kid applied EA. All the EA acceptances were leaked on a Sat morning. School scrambled an email saying the rest of the EA decisions would be released over “next several days.” Nothing on Sunday, then all the deferrals and rejections released on the Monday evening. THEN, there was no letter. Just a message in the portal that disappeared after you had read it once—giving you a big button to choose among a) convert your application to ED2, b) convert to RD, and c) withdraw. THEN days later this gem of a message, once again allowing you to see your EA decision letter and asking you to RESTATE your choice going forward. This is possibly bc some kids chose ED2, which is not something you can commit to by pressing a button. And maybe some people complained bc there was no letter. I offer no further commentary. Just the facts. And we don’t have a decision yet for my kid, btw. Take from it what you will.
This is that communication:

Thank you for your application to Northeastern University.

We are writing to remind you that the deadline to confirm your interest in either deferring your application to a later round or withdrawing it from consideration is February 6, 2023. If you've already submitted your response and have requested to change it, you may do so through the same form linked below.

You have until 11:59 p.m. EST on February 6, 2023 to submit your final decision through this form. After the deadline this form will become inactive—no further changes will be allowed.

We've received a number of requests from applicants who wish to review their deferred decision letter. A copy of this letter may be viewed here, along with our deferred student FAQ.

Should you choose to defer your application to a later round, you may submit a letter of interest, mid-year grades, and/or an updated résumé. Mid-year grades should be added to your Common Application or Coalition Application record by a school official. All other documents should be uploaded directly to your Application Status Check with a material type of "Deferred New Information". Please ensure documents are provided in the next week.

Finally, please note that students who choose to move to Early Decision II will be required submit their Early Decision agreement via the Application Status Check once it becomes available.
Sincerely,

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Man that’s an absolute cluster. There is this massive thing now where there is zero tolerance for kids but all kinds of bandwidth for academics and institutions. I wouldn’t send my kid there.
