Northeastern - worst admissions procedures on the planet

NEU made a mistake with sending out their info (happens EVERY year with a different school, mistakes happen, hence erasers on pencils and the "undo" buttons on computers) and OP is angry

Over 97,000 students applied to NEU, so clearly many students and their families are interested and those that got in will likely attend, so even though OP is still angry (and maybe will be forever), it will likely NOT have any effect on NEU's admissions process

OP, you can continue to angry for as long as you like, but why bother? It will help your health, your blood pressure, etc., if you could let it go

+1

Not the OP, don’t have a kid applying to NEU but mistakes like that are unacceptable. They never seem to make a mistake collecting the money for apps. They never forgive a kid who makes a mistake in submitting their app. This is a professional, academic organization and it is not unreasonable to expect them to perform as such.

Oh it’s actually worse than that. My kid applied EA. All the EA acceptances were leaked on a Sat morning. School scrambled an email saying the rest of the EA decisions would be released over “next several days.” Nothing on Sunday, then all the deferrals and rejections released on the Monday evening. THEN, there was no letter. Just a message in the portal that disappeared after you had read it once—giving you a big button to choose among a) convert your application to ED2, b) convert to RD, and c) withdraw. THEN days later this gem of a message, once again allowing you to see your EA decision letter and asking you to RESTATE your choice going forward. This is possibly bc some kids chose ED2, which is not something you can commit to by pressing a button. And maybe some people complained bc there was no letter. I offer no further commentary. Just the facts. And we don’t have a decision yet for my kid, btw. Take from it what you will.
This is that communication:

Thank you for your application to Northeastern University.

We are writing to remind you that the deadline to confirm your interest in either deferring your application to a later round or withdrawing it from consideration is February 6, 2023. If you've already submitted your response and have requested to change it, you may do so through the same form linked below.

You have until 11:59 p.m. EST on February 6, 2023 to submit your final decision through this form. After the deadline this form will become inactive—no further changes will be allowed.

We've received a number of requests from applicants who wish to review their deferred decision letter. A copy of this letter may be viewed here, along with our deferred student FAQ.

Should you choose to defer your application to a later round, you may submit a letter of interest, mid-year grades, and/or an updated résumé. Mid-year grades should be added to your Common Application or Coalition Application record by a school official. All other documents should be uploaded directly to your Application Status Check with a material type of "Deferred New Information". Please ensure documents are provided in the next week.

Finally, please note that students who choose to move to Early Decision II will be required submit their Early Decision agreement via the Application Status Check once it becomes available.
Sincerely,

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions
Northeastern University

Thanks for posting this - I will be showing it to my junior, who has Northeastern on the list at the moment. I'm not happy about the stress this can add, but good to set expectations going in.

So here we have 2 of the less that 3280 kids who scored 1580 out of over 2 million test takers AND never got less than a A in high school (I realize that in today’s world of massaging grades it may not mean that, but it’s still damned good) and Northeastern doesn’t want them?

Count yourselves lucky! It's a crappy school. So overrated. BTW... my DC did not apply so no dog in this fight, just my own observations regarding practices and results.

The people I know who have attended Northeastern, or who attend Northeastern currently have thoroughly enjoyed the school, and the experiences it led to. Maybe stick to topics you actually know?

There are only so many seats. Same with most (all?) top schools.

I’m a NP from Boston. Everyone from there knows it’s been gaming the system and have no regard for it

Good to know. The more I learn about this school, the more I am glad my kid is not going there.

It's called yield protection. If they didn't apply ED, NEU knows they are being seem as a safety school for your child - they probably won't attend.
