Not that funny for Asra to create such a toxic environment for the students.

No need to blame Asra Nomani for problems created by FCPS and the TJ administration.

We absolutely should blame Asra for trying to manufacture faux outrage that hurts the whole community. Such a terrible person.

I would submit Ann Bonitatubus and Brandon Kosatka are doing more damage to the FCPS community through their heavy-handed efforts to deny students and families information to which they were entitled. Both should be terminated from their positions.

FAUX OUTRAGE

Status was emailed to kids on their FCPS email that kids literally check multiple times a day.

This is on the kid if they didn’t check it in time.

And regardless, commended is a big nothingburger and no one is getting a different admissions decision based on that one thing.

Should they apologize? I guess, people are upset. Did they do anything wrong? No. If anything, this is proof that college board should be emailing results direct to kids instead of passing the buck to schools that already have 75926485 things to do. There is zero reason why one of the bubble sections on the psat can’t be “email address”

The kids were aware. And so were the parents who aren’t detested by their kids.

If the TJ community views a Letter of Commendation, awarded only to the top 3% of PSAT test takers, as a “big nothingburger,” it truly is time to tackle the arrogance by shutting down the magnet program.

Alternatively, the administration could apologize for its errors and FCPS could do the right thing and install new leadership at the school. Bonitatubus has stuck her foot in her mouth one too many times already, and now we are seeing that she also withheld information that she was obligated to pass only promptly to recognized students due to her misguided view of what advances an “equity” agenda.

I’m not part of the TJ community. I still view it as relatively meaningless. A pat on the back, a congratulations from mom and dad, sure. But something for a college app? Not really, unless you have nothing else to list there.

Would you tell the kid with a 206 from WV or Montana that is a semi finalist that it's "relatively meaningless?" Their score is lower than the TJ "commended" student's.

“Indefensible” that some kids neglected to tell their parents?

Maybe stop being a jerk and your kid will share these details with you.

Why didn’t she work with the TJ Admin to address this when she was in a position of influence? Why hold on to it until 2 days before Christmas and publish to a National audience?

How would she know the information was being withheld?

If, as she claims in the article, it has been going on for YEARS and impacted college admissions, then certainly parents were mentioning it. And she, as the PTSA president, should have advocated for a change.

But, I suspect parents/students don't actually care and recognize that national merit commended means nothing to colleges coming from TJ. Therefore, she is manufacturing a crisis.

There is no way it affected college admissions. Being Commended just doesn’t have that much meaning.

Which is bs. A student in VA gets a 218 and is "commended" which doesn't have much meaning. Meanwhile a student in North Dakota gets a 206 and is a semi-finalist. Why does the North Dakota student's lower score have more meaning than the Virginia student's high score?
I know it seems unfair, but it is what it is. Life isn’t fair. The students at TJ have many more options than those in NK or WV ot even many parts of VA.

Right, that's the thing. The students in these other parts of VA are judged by the same standards as TJ, even though they have fewer options. Why do students in ND and WV get the break but not the students in these non-TJ schools in VA?
Life isn’t fair. It never has been and it never will be. On a scale of 0-100 of things that are unfair, it rates below 1.

I was a national merit scholar in California. Yes, it’s meaningless, unless you want to go to a lower ranked school that offers you money for it. A semi finalist is absolutely nothing. Commended is less than that. There is literally no point to this. It’s just a huge money grab for the college board because they figured out how to get millions of kids to take the PSAT.
