Pandemic Babies and Speech

There’s no reasoning with those people because there’s no brain cells to reason to. If your child is delayed (mine is), get help, and find some place that doesn’t mask the only people talking to them.

If your child is delayed and others are not the solution is to get help for your child and not try to change the rules simply to suit you. The level of entitlement some people have is mind-boggling.

Now say that to the moms of teens on suicide watch because they haven’t seen their friends in two years. What color is the sky in the world you live in? Honest question.

Parents of teens are grossly shortsighted to keep their teens on lockdown. The rampant fear mongering is borderline criminal. “My kid committed suicide, but at least he didn’t have covid.” WTF!?!

Me.

And how would you say, do babies and toddlers learn to speak?

From people around them. Do you have your children in daycare 24/7?

If mom works 8 hours, has an hour lunch and an hour commute, her kid is in childcare the bulk of their waking hours. Do the math.

Can we at least replace "mom" with "parent" in this sentence? Thanks for keeping casual sexism out of this.

FWIW, many dual parent households split time a bit to reduce time in childcare. Others minimize lunch break if their job allows.

How old are your children? Any speech development concerns?

Is this a phenomenon peculiar to the DC area? Most people I know in other areas seem to be getting on with their lives after vaccinations.

Yes, it’s this area. Like the PP who called people “entitled” for wanting their kids to be in the best developmental environment possible. You could reverse that idiotic post to say:

Requiring masks in caregiving settings is not required in most parts of the country, and we have not seen a huge rise in pediatric deaths or covid complications in those areas. So if there is little public health benefit and possible harm being done to some children, why would we not provide options of unmasked care settings for those parents who want or need it? Why are you pushing your desire to mask toddlers and their caregivers on other people just because your kid appears fine right now? The level of entitlement some people have is mind-boggling.

I’m getting ready to move to DC (maybe, I’ll say this COVID hysteria gives me pause) and had never heard of masking providers in daycare before looking into daycares in the area. Our current daycare doesn’t - has never - masked, and there have been 0 serious or even moderate cases.

I don't think this is common even in this area. It's not back to normal, but even before vaccination, people were encouraging outdoor meetings for teens and even the younger kids, too.

---teens on lockdown not seeing any friends is what I'm referring to as uncommon.

The COVID hysteria should give you pause if you have young kids. My husband and I are starting to have real conversations about whether we want our children raised in this kind of environment.

+1. Waiting to see if the masks disappear by the Spring. If the masks come back in Fall 2023, we are moving. Don’t want to move, so hoping the hysteria dies after Omicron sweeps through.

OP here. Please move on and put your time to more constructive use.

This is aimed at the poster who keeps making the inane 24/7 comment.

Yes, but many kids are in daycare for almost all waking hours. Then commute home, dinner, and getting ready for bed are not the best opportunities for verbal communication. In the car, he can’t see the parents’ face at all. At dinner, conversation is between bites and many kids don’t sit at the table very long. For many kids, bath is a quiet and calming part of the bedtime routine. During bedtime stories the child isn’t looking at the parents’ face. It’s undeniable that most of the child’s daily interactions are inhibited by masks.

They won’t. Covid is like a religion now in DC. Very into masking, forced vaccinations for even kids and social distancing. I don’t see this going away for years. I’d say 2 years at the earliest. There will be another variant.

Schools were closed when there were hardly any cases. The response doesn’t make sense and likely never will. Move somewhere with decent public schools that try to remain open and less crime. The crime is its own issue and will get worse as the relief funds dry up and tax revenue decreases.

Same. I will cut bait before my oldest starts kindergarten. I can’t live with the hysteria and overprecautions

I’m the one potentially moving there and this just makes me sick to my stomach. Out of curiosity, is it DC proper or all of the region that is this insane? Are there commutable areas that are much more reasonable? I have read that Youngkin plans to rescind the Virginia state mandates.

Yep. Not sending my oldest to masked kindergarten or my youngest to masked preschool. I am holding onto hope that Omicron is the exit ramp. There is a good chance they stop the hysteria before the midterm elections. I also understand that there is a large Work From Home population that is only inconvenienced by masks at the grocery store and past the hostess stand at the restaurant. I guess I am counting on parents to prevail and sanity to return. Otherwise we will make a reluctant move to Florida.
