I see people in my yoga class and Cross-fit class who ROCK and totally kick my 30 year old butt at every task.
What is your secret - did you start at a much younger age, do you exercise consistently, a lot of practice, athletic activities in your youth? |
| 50 yo male here. I actually slacked through my 30s and the first half of my 40s on exercise. Got active in the last few years and damn if my body didn't respond as well, or better in some ways, than it did when I was young to exercise. So there is some compensation for aging. . . |
49.5 yo female and I agree with this. I excercise harder now than I did in my 30's but the rewards are better. Maybe that's because I'm also taking better care of myself in other ways, e.g. better diet, more sleep, no all night party sessions, etc. that I used to be able to get away with. Strength training/ weight lifting is also key. Thanks for the compliment! See, getting older does not have to be something to dread.... |
| Yet... |
| I started working out in my late 20s and I haven't really stopped since (just turned 50). I've done a variety of things over the past 20+ years - aerobic classes, running, weights, bootcamps, etc. I'm in the best shape of my life right now - much stronger and faster than I was in my 20s and 30s. For me, the key has been consistency; I have not stopped in all these years, even through 3 pregnancies. I have never taken any substantial time 'off' other than the mandatory 6 weeks post-partum (although I definitely started walking a good deal as soon as possible). I have found ways to fit exercise in, even when it hasn't been the *best* workout. So, during my pre-kids days, I could workout during the day, or in the evening. Then, I switched to early morning. Now I do a combo. I love what being fit does for my body, but I especially value the mental benefits. Too many of my friends and loved ones start something, but then stop. Get in a pattern and take one day at a time. Don't quit! |
| Exercise consistently, starting in my 30s after I finished having kids. Work out of some kind at least 5 days a week. |
+1 -- run, walk (at least to the Metro or with the dog), do yoga, play tennis or bike almost daily. Also eat mindfully, get enough sleep and have sex. |

My secret?
Basically, I don't eat. |
This is a little extreme. But, cutting out refined sugar as much as possible is a good start. |
| sunscreen, eat healthy, red wine, exercise, laugh and love more, hair dye, some make up, good friends, loving hubby |
This is my mother's strategy, and why she is a 64 year old size 4. She is basically vegan, but rarely eats any sugar or even oil as well. It's basically bread + fruits and veggies, more because those are the foods she likes. She has never liked fatty food. Oh, and she organic gardens all spring, summer, and fall, and cleans her own big house top to bottom, so that is a lot of exercise and activity. |
| Paleo, lots of lifting, running. |
| I'm not quite 50 yet, but getting close. The reason I'm in better shape than a lot of younger women is because I've been exercising consistently pretty much my whole life. I was a dancer in my youth and now I exercise harder than I did in my 20s and 30s. |
| Shack up with a 25 year old |
| Exercise 2 hrs every day. Eat fewer calories than I used to. Still running races and sprint triathlons. 53. |
