In MLS Next the end goal is to play professionally and ideally as young as possible. When you sign your kid up to be biobanded its the kiss of death for their chances at playing professionally. You dont look good dunking on younger players. People feel bad for your kid because they're being used as a crash test dummy for other players to get noticed.

Recruiters will have the same type of revolution watching an older player playing down a grade for wins.
Players aren't allowed to play down. Playing down is only allowed in MLSN late developers.

Under BY you are coreect.

Under the new SY 1 and maybe 2 months of players can play on a team with players their age or a team with players a grade lower. Unfortunately this is one of the by products of switching from BY to SY.

One parent is jumping out of their pants with excitement that their kid can play down a grade. Everyone else is trying to convince them that this is not a smart thing to do. But they wont listen

Stop talking age in one part of your reply and grade in the other. it's a 12-month age group. the grade doesn't matter. just as the grade hasn't matter the last 7 years during BY - or at least it didn't matter to any Jan-July parent that had their player a grade older than Aug-Dec players. But now it's an issue? If your August kid is a Sophomore and another August did is a freshman on your kids team, next year they will still be on the same team. They are the same age in the Aug 1st to July 31st age group. Grade has nothing to do with it.

Here are August kids on teams that are freshman and Sept kids on the same team that are sophomores. it's rare but it happens. it's an age group seperated by a 12-month window. same 12-month window that BY had an no issue of two different grades (which happened all the time on every team in the country).

Clubs wont allow this and leagues will provide some kind of rule saying nope. The reason why is the only person benefiting is the player playing down. And they're not even benefiting they're trading shot term wins for long term recruitability.

if there was a way clubs made more money allowing players to play down I could see it happening. But there isn't. In fact it would probabaly piss off all the parents on the grade down team.

Please stop. You’re the only one who thinks this and if you really believe this will happen, great! Wait for the leagues to announce that rule. You don’t need to convince us.

Why do you stop embarrassing yourself with all your efforts to play down. So pathetic.

For example, U16 last season was 2009 and 2010. This season, U16 is 2010 and 2011.

As an example, my son was born late December 2010. This means last season he would be very young, but this season he would be older than all of the 2011s at a minimum.

This also means the teams don’t stay together every season, which allows clubs and coaches to add or remove players.

There is no incentive for a coach to only pick the older kids, because today’s older kids are next year’s younger kids. Similarly, there is no incentive to discount or ignore the younger kids, because next season they will be the older kids and likely form the backbone of the team.

This a very refreshing approach, maybe that's part of the reason why Spain is a powerhouse , both men and women.

And I sure don't mind taking a break from some a-hole parents on my team , every other year.

We have 3 Q3/Q4 players biobanding in our team and playing almost full-time. Take it as a cue.

Only the + guy wants playing down. Playing within 12 months is playing on age. Pay attention.

Our Coach of Directors says MLS Next Academy division will do SY by 2026/27. Also, he says that otherwise the club would be forced to leave MLS Next Academy, because it wouldn't be possible to keep 2 age systems within the club.

My son plays U12 for Saint Paul Blackhawks, he is October.

Always appreciate real responses vs reckless speculation. It does seem the writing is on the wall.

Thanks. I suspect this is true at all MLSN AD clubs that have pre MLS age groups. Pretty much an on starter to maintain BY.

This is kills me that they haven't come out and just said it, or, the opposite. I'm not sure it entirely matters for my son, but I hate uncertainty.

My club director is tired of talking to freaked out parents who want favors. I suspect a late announcment to privide cover for the people on the front line.

Problem is a late announcement helps club directors either. Speaking as a family with all 4 kids at an USYS/US Club Soccer/ECNL club, some with fall birthdays and some not, we've known whats going to happen for a while, and so finally DOC actually gets to stop talking about it. Its going to be a big thing next year when they redo the rosters, and we've already seen a decent amount of kids coming through different age group practices, but at least no one has to answer the "will they wont they" question anymore.

Sorry hypocrite but grade in school matters.

You’re right! Let’s just go Grad Year and rip the bandaid off….

Sons team is MLS2 and coach said MLS2 is definitely switching to 8/1 next year and assumes MLS1 will as well.

Biobanding will still be an option.

Give me a break.

Its not hard to maintain different age groups. Especially when the top grouping (MLSN Homegrown) is the top tier and what everyone wants.

if if was the other way around and a single lower level league was a different grouping than everyone else. Then yes, this wouldn't work because it would be viewed as additional work with no benefit.
