Snow day

Teacher and mom here. Kids have been out playing in the snow for three days. They can wait at a bus stop in the snow or walk on the snowy sidewalks to school. This is absurd

Exactly! Friend is tell us how icy the sidewalk are. Ok…the same sidewalk the kid walked up and down all day to go to the sledding hill where they flew down on ice dodging trees.

The decision has nothing to do with waiting at a bus stop or walking on sidewalks to school. It's all about traffic and the buses navigating one lane streets (because only one side has been plowed). This is our street. We called our county supervisor and they said that this is VDOT's job (clearing streets and contracting to have streets cleared). So I would say that if you are unhappy you need to contact the governor and your state reps (because they fund VDOT and are in charge of VDOT).

FCPS is not in charge of plowing streets. Neither is Fairfax County.

Too busy on boundary and equity issues to come up with a plan to deal with the weather.

Correct. It's because they know this area is transient and many residents aren't ready to deal with the first snow. Of course DCUM knows better, has all the ski coats, mittens and woolly hats at the ready, and is itching to show off their AWD at the first snowflake... but normal people aren't. So when the second snow arrives, school systems get a little tighter.

What is "AWD?"

Anyone else skip buying $$$ snow gear for your kids since they grow so fast and it doesn’t even snow every year? Mine haven’t even been able to play much in the snow.

But with the current conditions (which I agree are bad on some side streets), and the weather not changing to mid-40s+ and/or rain to melt the ice … there is no way to open in the foreseeable future and that is the problem.

The sun melted some of the ice that was on my street and cul de sac today. It was a sheet of ice this morning when I looked out, by evening there are dry patches and icy patches. I still did not risk to drive on it yet. Not worth it. But I think the sun will cause some melting over the next few days.

That is so sad where I grew up there was a terrible accident of a bus sliding off a windy road and into a ditch. It was a big deal and a lot more caution the year after. All this crying and tantruming is embarrassing for parents who should care about their children and other children's safety.

Nevermind, you must mean "All Wheel Drive."

I thought maybe it was some high-end winter clothing brand.

This proves you can't make everyone happy.

The kids are happy they won't have to risk their lives on a bus and icy roads.

Again, hug your children. Spend this time with them. You won't live forever. And for some of you, you will outlive your child.

This is a gift to you both.

There will still be snow next week, so maybe reopen in June c

I watched the vdot map on Monday night and several of the plows were busy in the Target parking lot with like one in a nearby neighborhood.

The same kids will be walking around their neighborhood tomorrow and teens will be driving to the ski slopes.
