Like Google is protecting them.
As it should be. There is absolutely no need to ruin more lives over a misunderstanding. One person being treated this way is too many.
And if this wasn't a misunderstanding, but a deliberate effort to find a white woman to harass (and cause the internet to also harass) as an exercise in "punching up" (a.k.a. channeling rage upon the head of a convenient scapegoat)? Still ok for these guys to face zero consequences, and for others to know they can continue to target women without censure?
The woman who was actually present and involved has said it was a misunderstanding. While you may not respect her enough to believe her or to think she is capable of assessing the situation, her lawyer does. Dismissing what she says to make up a false narrative that is based on solely on personal assumptions and biases and not on fact to say this was a deliberate act to find a white woman to harrass is no better than making up a false narrative that she was a racist stealing a bike.
The woman has spoken through her lawyer and stated her interpretation and what she wants from this. Lets give her basic respect that she is a competent and capable woman who is able to understand and interpret the situation she was in and to state her wants and needs.
It was not a misunderstanding. It looked very calculated. She is just trying to play nice per her lawyer as she is now being targeted because of her race and because of her skin color there was no way she could be in the right. This is clearly racism at its finest. These men need to step up. The hospital and local businesses and police need to release any security footage and the bike company needs to produce records from both parties. Get an answer to who was right. That man had no right to grab the bike with her on it and shove it back into the holder because he wanted it. And his friend making the horrible comments should also be held accountable. and, if she stole the bike that’s between her and the police and company, not her employer as she was off duty not on hospital property.
She didn't steal the bike. A misunderstanding means that people misinterpreted the situation, it happens every day. It doesn't mean she or they had to be criminals. The lawyer has likely already looked into much of it and has concluded and stated it was a misunderstanding.
They are taking the high road. He forced the bike back into the rack with her on it. That is assault. Misunderstanding would be him nicely approaching her saying hey I rented this bike, here is my receipt, could I have my bike back please? If she refuses you contact customer support and get a new bike. You don’t grab a bike someone is on to shove it in the rack to demand the bike. You don’t scream nasty comments to her. She clearly rented that bike. The men refuse to step up which makes it more suspicious. She has no choice but to try to clean this up by playing nice. She’s not getting any support from the company, her employer or the police. She is on her own. And, the men who refuse to identify themselves have all the activists after her.
Not all misunderstadings are calm. THere was clearly a mild confrontation which makes sense if he thought he had paid for a bike she was taking (even if he was wrong - that is his misunderstading). If I thought someone was taking a bike I had paid for, I might grab the handle too and relock it to keep them from riding away as people have said that it can cost over $1200 if someone takes a bike you paid for. I saw another video where a man did try to steal a Ciibike and the rightful renter actually assaulted him and punched him to get him off the bike. A misunderstanding means you are acting based on a misperception of events. As her lawyer said as soon as she sat on the bike, they did verbally start to tell her that they had paid for it and that it was their bike - before she had even finished paying for it and unlocked it. But then after they told her that it was their bike, she rolled it back and started to leave, so the party beleiving it was under their account, grabbed the handle bars to keep her from taking it.
Based on her lawyers emphasis on the word 'young', I believe these men could be minors. It seems from the information the lawyer has, the young men may have been in touch with him or the police already. Just because they haven't identified themselves publicly, doesn't mean no one knows who they are. I know I am the only one (on here) who believes they could be anything other than evil, malicious, rage-filled, racist criminals but they may well have reached out, apologized for being rude and for the misunderstanding, and all is good between the parties.
