As an American who has worked in humanitarian aid, I've always found it 'off' that American celebrities will move the world to have great impact abroad but rarely if ever do anything at home. The Bill+Melinda Gates Foundation spends hundreds of millions annually fighting disease and hunger abroad but nothing in the U.S. which finances their generosity through Microsoft. Oprah built an entire private school system in South Africa but nothing here in the U.S. where her network coverage over decades made her a billionaire. Angelina Jolie is infamous for appearing in refugee camps globally, and adopting children from impacted places, but you don't see her step foot inside a U.S. shelter to volunteer. George Clooney built an entire satellite network just to spy on the government of Sudan and record human rights atrocities. But nothing in the U.S. for police brutality and high murder rates of BIPOC. I'm giving all these examples to say, I truly wish celebrities who were born here, raised here, and became wealthy in the United States did more to not only support impoverished Americans but also shed light on the problems that we have - from the clean water crisis in Flint to the educational blackhole of West Virginia to the high gang violence in Chicago to the LGBTQ homeless crisis in California. Its time that celebrities did more on American soil and I like that this is Meghan Markle's focus. |
H & M is not forcing your news source to cover them; so this must mean they are newsworthy to your news source. |
NP but I don’t have a problem with them doing charity work in the U.S. I certainly agree as a public school teacher for many years that there are great needs to be met in the US. I don’t need Meghan and Harry to address Americans in a televised address. We have no connection to them and therefore no trust in them. If Oprah were to address the US that would be different because she has built up a relationship with Americans. MM and Harry need to do that first. The only thing that still pops into my head when Harry is mentioned is the Nazi incident because I never follow royal news. He needs to rebrand and live here awhile before lecturing any of us. |
Odd that you mention Oprah and that you don't want a 'televised address' from Meghan+Harry. how do you think Oprah built up that relationship with Americans? She had a 3-decade career on television. Everyone starts somewhere, that is what Meghan+Harry are doing. Also I guess I can see the irony of Americans like you being piqued at being lectured to, but Americans love going abroad and lecturing locals on the proper way to educate their young, the proper way to vote, the proper way to build electrical power grids and roads, the proper way to vaccinate against disease (particularly ironic since we have the worst case rate + death rate in the world right now for Covid-19). Since I've witnessed this firsthand it doesn't really bother me to have the tables turned. Especially since Meghan Markle is an American anyway. |
Of course she is. There's no way she would have announced the mc if she wasn't already pregnant. Her PR team may suck but they know that much. |
Fellow former humanitarian worker. I suspect you noticed their global work more because you are focused on it? But almost all of those celebrities also do quite a bit of work here in the US. Bill and Melinda Gates have a whole section of their foundation focused on education in the US. Oprah has quite a bit of philanthropic work she does here in the US. She focuses on scholarships to HBCUs. Millions and millions and millions donated over decades to them. Not to mention the largest of any donations to the AA Culture and History museum here in DC. George Clooney has made a major donation to the SPLC which does amazing work. I'm sure he's given others. These are the ones from your list that I can note off the top of my head. Maybe their international work gets more attention (which raises more of a question about what the media wants to focus on rather than the celebrities themselves). |
Honestly it kind of makes the segment that much more obnoxious. It seems very "look at me I'm pregnant again." |
Wow. She has not announced, hinted, or said she's pregnant. To post such vicious bile is just cruel, particularly after her miscarriage. I have no idea what's wrong with you people. |
I disagree. I think the segment is very much the hint. I wish they would pick a cause and do media appearances with a consistent focus. It would make it much easier to cheer for them. |
Agree, some of these posters sound unhinged |
To me her face looks puffy due to fillers. |

Honest question: What do you think the Queen and Prince Charles and Prince William think of Meghan's lecture on CNN?
|
Didn't she have a bunch of abortions? That will make her cervix more susceptible to weakness and miscarriage. |
Do you know anything about public relations, PP? I do, and as I said, this is a classic move. Her PR machine knows what they're doing. *She put out there that she had a miscarriage. She knew what she was doing. |
